<p>Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe part 2 &#8211; Part one is <a href="https://expats.adamfayed.com/best-cities-for-expats-in-eastern-europe-part-1---moving-to-eastern-europe/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://expats.adamfayed.com/best-cities-for-expats-in-eastern-europe-part-1---moving-to-eastern-europe/">here</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="10-best-cities-for-expats-in-eastern-europe">10 Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1023" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/32607507732_2face5015f_b.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8653" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/32607507732_2face5015f_b.jpg 1023w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/32607507732_2face5015f_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/32607507732_2face5015f_b-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px" /></figure>

<p>Expats moving to a new location can get an idea of the place through current and expat reviews. One such source of information is the InterNations Expat Insider 2021 survey, which helps people compare cities based on their quality of life and ease of settling in. We take a sneak peek at the best cities to live in Eastern Europe, which made it to the top of the list.</p>

<p>The survey looks at a number of factors: Quality of Life, Ease of Settling in, and Family Life. Additionally, expat Insider also provides an overview of what needs improving and whether people would recommend their city as a good place for others to settle in. Here are the ten best cities in Eastern Europe for expats.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="1-zagreb-croatia">1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Zagreb, Croatia</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="684" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/29255640143_745390fd38_b.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8636" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/29255640143_745390fd38_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/29255640143_745390fd38_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/29255640143_745390fd38_b-768x513.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The capital city of Croatia, with a population of over 800,000 people, is as welcoming as it is cosmopolitan and has thus made it to the list. In 2021, more than 76 percent of expats said that they enjoyed living in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zagreb" data-type="URL" data-id="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zagreb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Zagreb</a>.</p>

<p>The city has a lot going for it as far as quality of life goes. But it also lags behind other cities on the list when it comes to ease of settling down and making friends. It ranks considerably higher for family life as well. However, Zagreb&#8217;s low crime rate and decent healthcare system make it more attractive to expats.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="2-budapest-hungary">2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Budapest, Hungary</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31391313991_76eeb3dfe8_b.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8637" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31391313991_76eeb3dfe8_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31391313991_76eeb3dfe8_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31391313991_76eeb3dfe8_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Hungary&#8217;s vibrant capital is at number two on the list. Over 79 percent of expats rated their quality of life as good in 2021, which was one percent higher than the previous year. Additionally, 70 percent felt that settling in was easy. As for making friends, Budapest ranked pretty high on the list, but over 81 percent termed it as a recommended place to live.</p>

<p>The Ease of Settling in Index assigns Budapest a higher score than Zagreb&#8217;s, which had lesser points despite ranking higher on the list. Meanwhile, Budapest&#8217;s place on the Quality of Life Index may be due to its low score for amenities.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="3-prague-czech-republic">3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prague, Czech Republic</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="686" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/prague-4925864_1280-1024x686.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8640" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/prague-4925864_1280-1024x686.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/prague-4925864_1280-300x201.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/prague-4925864_1280-768x514.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/prague-4925864_1280.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic (with a population of over 1 million people), ranked third on our list. Despite being one of the cheapest places in Europe to live in, expats are still satisfied with their quality of life, which increased by two percentage points.</p>

<p>Prague also ranked higher than other cities on the list when it came to the ease of settling down and making friends. This can be attributed to its high ratings for Fashion &amp; Shopping, Leisure Options as well as Safety &amp; Security—the city ranked number one on the list for this factor.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="4-bratislava-slovakia">4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bratislava, Slovakia</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/38152944235_c528bbca8e_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8641" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/38152944235_c528bbca8e_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/38152944235_c528bbca8e_b-300x169.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/38152944235_c528bbca8e_b-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The capital of Slovakia (with a population of over 583,600 people) is number 2 on the list. Expats are highly satisfied with their quality of life here—79 percent, which is three percentage points higher compared to 2019.</p>

<p>Additionally, 67 percent felt that settling in was easy, while Bratislava ranked good on the list of cities people would recommend. When it comes to family life, however, expats are not quite satisfied with what they offer—the city ranks low. This is despite scoring highly enough for both Costs of Living and Ease of Settling In.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="5-ljubljana-slovenia">5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ljubljana, Slovenia</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/19392222130_b3f3399bd5_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8642" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/19392222130_b3f3399bd5_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/19392222130_b3f3399bd5_b-300x169.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/19392222130_b3f3399bd5_b-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The capital city of Slovenia, with a population of 275,000 people, was voted as the best place to live in Eastern Europe by expats. It outranked other cities on the list regarding the quality of life and ease of settling down (it ranked number 5 on our list).</p>

<p>Ljubljana is also a recommended place for settling in by 82 percent of expats. Settling down seems easier here as it ranked number 17 while making friends didn&#8217;t do so well with its 56th rank on the list. This can be attributed to its low scores for Leisure Options and Nightlife.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="6-sarajevo-bosnia-and-herzegovina">6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="659" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sarajevo_7-1024x659.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8643" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sarajevo_7-1024x659.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sarajevo_7-300x193.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sarajevo_7-768x494.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sarajevo_7.jpg 1277w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with over 275,569 people, made it to the list at number six. About 78 percent of expats said that they enjoyed living in Sarajevo—a three percentage point increase from 2019.</p>

<p>It also ranked high on the list regarding ease of settling down. However, expats are not too satisfied with their quality of life. This is because; it ranked 51 out of 65 for this factor.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="7-belgrade-serbia">7.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Belgrade, Serbia</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/belgrade_346-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8644" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/belgrade_346-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/belgrade_346-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/belgrade_346-768x512.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/belgrade_346.jpg 1254w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Serbia&#8217;s capital city with over 1 million people is number 7 on the list. Over 76 percent of expats said they are satisfied with living in Belgrade. On the other hand, an eight percentage point increases from the previous year. It also ranked highly (at number 16) when it came to ease of settling down.</p>

<p>As for making friends, Belgrade ranked 50th place on the list—the city didn&#8217;t do too well as it scored poorly for Leisure options and Nightlife.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="8-bucharest-romania">8.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Bucharest, Romania</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="569" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bucharest-digital-nomads-1024x569.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8645" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bucharest-digital-nomads-1024x569.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bucharest-digital-nomads-300x167.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bucharest-digital-nomads-768x426.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bucharest-digital-nomads.jpg 1500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Bucharest, the capital of Romania with a population of slightly over 2 million people, is at number 8 on the list. Just over 76 percent said that they are satisfied living here. Meanwhile, a seven percentage point increase from 2019.</p>

<p>It ranked well on ease of settling down (at 22 out of 65) but not so much in terms of quality of life (ranked at 45). This can be attributed to its poorly scored factors for Cost of Living and Safety &amp; Security.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="9-sofia-bulgaria">9.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Sofia, Bulgaria</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="765" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sofia-900056_1280-1024x765.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8646" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sofia-900056_1280-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sofia-900056_1280-300x224.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sofia-900056_1280-768x574.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/sofia-900056_1280.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria with a population of 1.24 million people, is number 9 on today&#8217;s list. Over 75 percent said they are satisfied living here—a six percent increase from 2019.</p>

<p>It ranked low (at 30 out of 65) when it comes to ease of settling down but did better when making friends (at number 31). This is because of its low scores for Leisure Options and Nightlife.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="10-riga-latvia">10. Riga, Latvia</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="960" height="640" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Building-Riga-Old-Town-Riga-Latvia-Dom-2419160.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8647" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Building-Riga-Old-Town-Riga-Latvia-Dom-2419160.jpg 960w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Building-Riga-Old-Town-Riga-Latvia-Dom-2419160-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Building-Riga-Old-Town-Riga-Latvia-Dom-2419160-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></figure>

<p>Riga, the capital of Latvia with over 614,618 populations, was voted as the 10th best city for expats in Eastern Europe. Fewer than 75 percent are happy living here, making it an 11 percentage point increase from 2019. It ranked low (at 42 out of 65) when it came to settling down and ease of doing so.</p>

<p>Its poorly scored factors can explain this for Leisure Options and the Cost of Living. Also, nearly two-thirds of expats don&#8217;t feel safe walking alone at night. Therefore, Riga ranked at 49th place on the list regarding safety and security.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="top-5-tourists-attractions-in-eastern-europe">Top 5 Tourists Attractions in Eastern Europe</h2>

<p>Eastern Europe is a part of the continent that has been more isolated from Western European countries, and it can also be described as a place where modern architecture has not gone through its greatest changes.</p>

<p>People who travel to Eastern Europe prefer visiting historical sights and landmarks to contemporary art galleries and museums. This means; these people want to experience what they see in pictures rather than admire modern architecture. So, read what you will find as the top 5 tourists attractions in Eastern Europe.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="chernobyl-the-ghost-town">Chernobyl &#8211; The Ghost Town</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="513" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/atom-3669815_1280-1024x513.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8648" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/atom-3669815_1280-1024x513.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/atom-3669815_1280-300x150.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/atom-3669815_1280-768x385.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/atom-3669815_1280.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Visiting Chernobyl, a ghost town abandoned after the nuclear disaster in 1986, is not for everyone. Even though it&#8217;s mostly safe to travel there now, many people don&#8217;t want to live downwind from a potential fallout zone. The surrounding area of Pripyat used to be home to over 50,000 people, and tourists can visit this area and see how the nuclear power plant affected the lives of residents.</p>

<p>Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Croatia, and it consists of 16 lakes surrounded by different types of forests. The lakes are connected with small waterfalls and cascades, while their colors change from emerald green through turquoise to azure blue.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="romania-bran-castle">Romania: Bran Castle</h3>

<p>Several places claim to be Dracula&#8217;s medieval castle. However, Bran Castle &#8211; which is visited by around 200,000 tourists every year &#8211; has a strong case for actually being the home of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Dracula.</p>

<p>Poland&#8217;s second-largest city was almost destroyed during World War II, and it has been restored to its former glory with cobble-stoned streets, Gothic churches, and Renaissance buildings. With so much history painted on each brick of its buildings, Krakow is one of the most visited cities in Eastern Europe.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="conclusion">Conclusion</h3>

<p>Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe part 1 &#8211; that will be the topic of today’s article.</p>

<p>Before introducing this article, if you are interested in our core services which are expat financial, insurance and mortgages, you can contact me&nbsp;<a href="https://adamfayed.com/expats-lets-talk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The best time to consider your financial situation is when you are moving to a new country.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="introduction"><strong>Introduction</strong></h2>

<p>The ever-increasing number of people looking for a better place to live and work has led many to seek an overseas adventure. Eastern Europe is a popular destination for expats because of its reputation as a safe, economically stable region that also offers a lower cost of living than found in Western Europe.</p>

<p>According to the latest HSBC Expat Explorer survey, nine out of the top ten emerging cities for expats are located in Eastern Europe. In order to qualify as an &#8217;emerging&#8217; city on HSBC&#8217;s list, a location must be considered safe and economically vibrant, with a projected economic growth of over 2% annually until 2021.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/old-town-square-in-prague-czech-republic-free-photo-1024x683.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8629" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/old-town-square-in-prague-czech-republic-free-photo-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/old-town-square-in-prague-czech-republic-free-photo-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/old-town-square-in-prague-czech-republic-free-photo-768x512.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/old-town-square-in-prague-czech-republic-free-photo.jpg 1469w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>A total of 48 different variables were analyzed by HSBC based on several key factors. This includes political and social stability, the ease of settling into daily life in a new country, access to health services, availability of schooling options for children, levels of community spirit, and other factors that expats would consider when relocating abroad.</p>

<p>Since we all know that different people prioritize different factors when considering an expat destination, we&#8217;ll give you the top ten cities in Eastern Europe for each of the seven major factors. Some items may be considered more important than others for specific expats, and each section has a guide to help you weigh the importance of the given factor when choosing your ideal location.</p>

<p>In addition, we will explain the best tourist attractions for expats in this region. Not only is that, but we will explain the benefits of living in this area and many others. Would you love to relocate to Eastern Europe or be willing to have a vacation to those countries? Worry less as we’ve answered all the questions you may have in mind.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="why-expats-need-to-live-in-eastern-europe">Why Expats Need to Live in Eastern Europe</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Ljubljana-131.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8630" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Ljubljana-131.jpg 1000w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Ljubljana-131-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Ljubljana-131-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p>The expat populations in Eastern Europe have grown significantly over the last decade. With the globalization of our world, more and more people are moving abroad for work or adventure.</p>

<p>Many choose to live in Eastern <a href="https://expats.adamfayed.com/how-to-become-an-expat-in-europe-part-1-benefits-of-living-in-europe/" data-type="post" data-id="8349">Europe</a>, where it&#8217;s possible to be closer to other countries while also enjoying an affordable cost of living. If you&#8217;re considering making a move abroad, here are five reasons why you should consider Eastern European countries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="quality-of-life">Quality of Life</h3>

<p>The quality of life for expats in Eastern Europe is very high, and whether you&#8217;re looking to live in a city or rural area, Eastern Europe has something for everyone. The affordability and variety of amenities make it easy to enjoy your life abroad.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="travel-opportunities">Travel Opportunities</h3>

<p>Eastern Europe is very accessible for travelers due to its proximity to other countries. This makes it easy for expats who want an affordable vacation or weekend trip abroad. With so many different destinations within a short flight or train ride away, you&#8217;ll never get tired of the travel opportunities.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="exciting-job-opportunities">Exciting Job Opportunities</h3>

<p>Job opportunities in Eastern Europe are plentiful and growing every day. If you possess a skill or degree in high demand, you&#8217;ll have no problem finding employment abroad.</p>

<p>&nbsp; Many jobs pay very well, and there is often the opportunity for advancement as more businesses open their doors to the international workforce. Plus, several of these countries do not require you to speak the language fluently, making it easy for expats to get their foot in the door.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="affordability">Affordability</h3>

<p>Several Eastern European countries offer a high quality of life at an affordable price. If you&#8217;re looking to stretch your money as far as possible, this is definitely one of the best places to do it. From the cost of groceries to transportation, you&#8217;ll find that living abroad is more affordable than back home.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="low-tension">Low Tension</h3>

<p>Despite being very close to Western Europe, Eastern European countries are not as stressful as other countries. Many expats enjoy the laid-back nature and warm people they encounter throughout their stay. If you&#8217;re someone who enjoys a life with fewer worries, Eastern Europe is the perfect place for you.</p>

<p>Eastern European countries offer many benefits to expats, such as high quality of life and affordable living. If you want to live somewhere where your dollar stretches far and travel opportunities are endless, this part of the world may be the right fit for you.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="interesting-culture">Interesting Culture</h3>

<p>Eastern European countries have a unique culture that is easy to immerse yourself in. The different languages and customs can be an exciting way to learn something new every day, as well as make new friends from around the world! Many Eastern European cities also offer incredible nightlife and entertainment, making it fun for expats to unwind after a long day.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/47710762002_30aaf5fa79_b.jpg" alt="Best Cities for Expats in Eastern Europe" class="wp-image-8631" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/47710762002_30aaf5fa79_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/47710762002_30aaf5fa79_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/47710762002_30aaf5fa79_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="low-cost-of-living">Low Cost of Living</h3>

<p>Every expat dreams of an affordable cost of living, and this is often something that many find in Eastern Europe. Whether you want to live in a rural or urban area, the prices are almost always much lower than at home. From buying groceries to paying rent, you&#8217;ll be able to stretch your money much further while living in Eastern Europe.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="factors-to-consider-before-moving-to-eastern-europe">Factors to Consider Before Moving to Eastern Europe</h2>

<p>While many people dream of moving to Eastern Europe, the vibrant culture and thriving economies are no secret. Gone are the days when Communist sentiments were repressed by propaganda. This part of the world has undergone a complete transformation into an ideal destination for those hoping to live their version of the American Dream.</p>

<p>However, as technology has made communication between different world regions easier, new obstacles have been introduced. Moving abroad is a major decision with serious long-term consequences. And those considering it should know all of the risks beforehand to make an informed choice about their futures. As such, I&#8217;ve compiled a list of five factors to consider before moving to Eastern Europe.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="1-language-barriers">1)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Language Barriers</h3>

<p>Although many Eastern European countries have transitioned to English as their second language, knowing the local vernacular cannot be overlooked completely. In reality, much of the vocabulary from Russia and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland" data-type="URL" data-id="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Poland</a> are interchangeable, but only knowing English won&#8217;t help you get anywhere with locals if you&#8217;re not familiar with some standard Polish slang terms.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/c-belgrade-hotels-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8632" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/c-belgrade-hotels-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/c-belgrade-hotels-300x169.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/c-belgrade-hotels-768x432.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/c-belgrade-hotels.jpg 1216w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="2-cultural-differences">2)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Cultural Differences</h3>

<p>One of the great things about moving to Eastern Europe is celebrating Christmas on January 7th and the New Year at different times of the year! However, while some cultural differences may catch you off guard initially, it&#8217;s important to remember that they&#8217;re based on tradition and can add a lot of value to your experience.</p>

<p>For instance, if you ever get into an argument with a family member, don&#8217;t be surprised if they sit silently and glare at you for a long time. While it might feel awkward, that&#8217;s just how they show displeasure &#8211; not to mention it&#8217;s kind of scary.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="3-travel-opportunities">3)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Travel Opportunities</h3>

<p>Eastern Europe is a hotbed for travel. There are countless cultural and historical opportunities in close proximity, and most people speak English well enough to help you navigate. For instance, not only do the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) share borders with Russia and Belarus; they also have water access through Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.</p>

<p>Whether you want to visit the capital cities of Tallinn, Riga, or Vilnius; go on a road trip through Latvia; taste world-famous Lithuanian beer; or take advantage of Estonia&#8217;s e-residency system, which gives non-citizens access to online banking facilities &#8211; you&#8217;re spoilt for choice, and the opportunities are only growing as these countries become more popular amongst foreign travelers.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bvmsn8cgnhcvusxijpo4-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8655" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bvmsn8cgnhcvusxijpo4-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bvmsn8cgnhcvusxijpo4-300x225.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bvmsn8cgnhcvusxijpo4-768x576.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bvmsn8cgnhcvusxijpo4.jpg 1120w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="4-housing-issues">4)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Housing Issues</h3>

<p>Although renting is a popular choice among foreigners, the conditions of some dwellings may come as a shock to those who aren&#8217;t used to such low living standards. If you&#8217;re looking for apartment rentals in Eastern Europe, I would advise bringing a flashlight.</p>

<p>In many instances, the electricity will have been turned off because the landlord hasn&#8217;t paid their bills, and sometimes you won&#8217;t be able to see a foot in front of you when you enter a room.</p>

<p>However, this shouldn&#8217;t come as a surprise &#8211; Eastern European countries have some of the highest unemployment rates in the world. With people struggling to make ends meet, don&#8217;t be surprised if your landlords try to haggle down the rent price or flat out demand you pay them in cash.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="5-financial-concerns">5)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Financial Concerns</h3>

<p>Although Eastern European countries are generally cheaper than their Western counterparts, they still require residents to have stable sources of income for basic living expenses. For those who earn money in their home countries and deposit it into local accounts, the difficulties of transferring funds will be highlighted &#8211; especially if you want to withdraw them as cash.</p>

<p>Even though online banks like Revolut and Transferwise offer affordable rates for currency exchanges, it&#8217;s important to note that you can&#8217;t take advantage of them if you&#8217;re not a resident in the country.</p>

<p>Likewise, credit and debit card companies generally charge foreign transactions fees on top of their interest rates, which means that even though it may be easier to pay bills online, you&#8217;ll still end up paying more for goods and services than those who live locally.</p>

<p>Eastern European countries may be cheap, but don&#8217;t expect to find your dream job in a weekend. Do your research and do everything to build up your local contacts before moving abroad. It will make a living in Eastern Europe much easier when you&#8217;re ready for that next step.</p>

<p>Best Cities For Expats In Central Europe part 2 &#8211; Part one is <a href="https://expats.adamfayed.com/best-cities-for-expats-in-central-europe-part-1---best-tourists-attractions/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://expats.adamfayed.com/best-cities-for-expats-in-central-europe-part-1---best-tourists-attractions/">here</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="best-cities-for-expats-in-central-europe">Best Cities for Expats in Central Europe</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/22383594103_98e3e0ece1_b.jpg" alt="Best Cities For Expats In Central Europe" class="wp-image-8620" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/22383594103_98e3e0ece1_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/22383594103_98e3e0ece1_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/22383594103_98e3e0ece1_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Europe is a prime destination for expatriates who want to experience different cultures and ways of living. But which European cities provide the best quality of life, high salaries, and a safe environment?</p>

<p>While it&#8217;s true that most people would rather live in London or Paris, those places are notoriously expensive and stressful. If you want to become part of the European community while still enjoying a comfortable life, you might be better off somewhere else &#8211; but where?</p>

<p>To answer that question, we&#8217;ll be looking at ten Central European cities. And when it comes to whether or not they&#8217;re safe to live in, one only needs to take a look at the Global Peace Index and Europe&#8217;s crime rate. According to the GPI, here are the best cities for expats in Central Europe</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="prague">Prague</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_skyline_view-1024x683.jpg" alt="Best Cities For Expats In Central Europe" class="wp-image-8608" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_skyline_view-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_skyline_view-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_skyline_view-768x512.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_skyline_view-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_skyline_view-2048x1366.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, which was voted the second safest country in Europe in 2013 by the U.K.&#8217;s Telegraph. That makes sense considering that it has one of the lowest murder rates in Europe, with only 10 murders per 100,000 people (compare that to New York City).</p>

<p>The Czech Republic also has plenty of other attractions, including historical buildings and gothic churches. And it&#8217;s much cheaper than living in wealthier Western European countries &#8211; rent, for example, is extremely affordable.</p>

<p>Czech citizens are also highly educated, with over half the population attending college. This means that if you&#8217;re looking for a highly skilled workforce, you might want to check out Prague.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="warsaw">Warsaw</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="578" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Warsaw-1024x578.jpg" alt="Best Cities For Expats In Central Europe" class="wp-image-8609" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Warsaw-1024x578.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Warsaw-300x169.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Warsaw-768x433.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Warsaw.jpg 1363w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Warsaw is the capital of Poland and is also centrally located in Europe, making it a very easy place for expatriates to travel around on business or vacation. It&#8217;s one of the safest cities in Europe &#8211; only ten murders per 100,000 people &#8211; and rent is extremely affordable.</p>

<p>Although Poland isn&#8217;t one of the wealthiest countries in Europe, most people are able to find jobs with ease. Between January and September of 2019, only around 47,000 Poles were unemployed. And if you&#8217;re looking for a highly skilled workforce, Warsaw has its fair share of college graduates too.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="vienna">Vienna</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/vienna-hotels-vacation-packages-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8610" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/vienna-hotels-vacation-packages-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/vienna-hotels-vacation-packages-300x169.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/vienna-hotels-vacation-packages-768x432.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/vienna-hotels-vacation-packages.jpg 1216w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The Austrian capital, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna" data-type="URL" data-id="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vienna</a>, is another rather pristine place that&#8217;s not too expensive to live in. It has a high employment rate with only around 7 percent of the population out of work. And it&#8217;s one of Europe&#8217;s safest cities, with only 10 cases of murder per 100,000 people each year.</p>

<p>However, don&#8217;t let these statistics fool you &#8211; Austria is one of the wealthier countries in Europe. That being said, it still isn&#8217;t as expensive to live there since rent is inexpensive compared to other Western European cities.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="budapest">Budapest</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1023" height="614" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31363963556_01d741d36d_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8611" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31363963556_01d741d36d_b.jpg 1023w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31363963556_01d741d36d_b-300x180.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/31363963556_01d741d36d_b-768x461.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px" /></figure>

<p>Hungary&#8217;s capital city, Budapest, was ranked by Mercer&#8217;s 2017 Cost of Living Survey as one of the &#8220;most expensive cities in the world.&#8221; However, most Hungary is relatively affordable to Western Europeans looking to settle down.</p>

<p>Though it&#8217;s not as safe as other countries on this list (with around 17 murders per 100,000 people), but Budapest still has extremely low unemployment, and most Hungarians are literate and well-educated.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="copenhagen">Copenhagen</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/28435382407_1fd5bb96f3_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8612" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/28435382407_1fd5bb96f3_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/28435382407_1fd5bb96f3_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/28435382407_1fd5bb96f3_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is also one of Europe&#8217;s safest cities, with only 16 cases of murder per 100,000 people annually. It was ranked as the European Union&#8217;s &#8220;most livable city&#8221; in 2010 by Monocle magazine due to its high standard of living.</p>

<p>Denmark has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, partly due to its healthy and nutritious diet. It also has a very educated population, with around 85 percent of people attending college. And as far as rent goes, it&#8217;s cheaper than living in other Western European cities.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="helsinki">Helsinki</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="674" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/finlande-helsinki_643-1024x674.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8613" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/finlande-helsinki_643-1024x674.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/finlande-helsinki_643-300x198.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/finlande-helsinki_643-768x506.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/finlande-helsinki_643.jpg 1262w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Finnish cities tend to be relatively safe with low crime rates, and Helsinki is no exception. It has a particularly low murder rate at only 12 per 100,000 people. Finland is also ranked as one of the best countries in the world for quality of life, partly due its excellent education system.</p>

<p>Around 73 percent of Finns have attended college, and its literacy rate is about 100 percent. And since Finland has a relatively large land area, there&#8217;s plenty of wilderness to explore if you&#8217;re bored with city life.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="berlin">Berlin</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="719" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/standard_compressed_berlin9-1024x719.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8614" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/standard_compressed_berlin9-1024x719.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/standard_compressed_berlin9-300x211.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/standard_compressed_berlin9-768x540.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/standard_compressed_berlin9.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Germany&#8217;s capital city, Berlin, has perhaps one of the most interesting histories of all European cities &#8211; from being divided during the Cold War to being the center of the notorious Nazi regime. But these days, it&#8217;s a very safe place &#8211; Berlin has the lowest homicide rate in Germany.</p>

<p>Berlin has also become rather trendy lately thanks to its various cultural events and thriving startup scene. It ranks relatively high on several livability indexes, including Mercer&#8217;s 2017 Quality of Living Survey, which ranked it as the ninth-best city in the world to live in. Most importantly, however, it&#8217;s a very affordable place to live, with rent much cheaper than other Western European capitals.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="brussels">Brussels</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="960" height="640" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Brussels-Belgium-Hdr-Plaza-City-519965.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8615" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Brussels-Belgium-Hdr-Plaza-City-519965.jpg 960w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Brussels-Belgium-Hdr-Plaza-City-519965-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Brussels-Belgium-Hdr-Plaza-City-519965-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px" /></figure>

<p>Brussels is home to one of the most important political centers in the world, as well as NATO and the European Union. It also has one of the highest employment rates in Europe, with only 7 percent of its population unemployed.</p>

<p>Belgium is perhaps one of the best countries you can live in as far as education goes. The literacy rate there is a whopping 99 percent, and it&#8217;s ranked as having the second-best school system on the planet. It also has a pretty healthy diet, though it does have a high rate of obesity. But the main reason this city is so great? It has affordable rent.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="ljubljana">Ljubljana</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/ljubljana-2687912_1280-1024x682.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8616" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/ljubljana-2687912_1280-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/ljubljana-2687912_1280-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/ljubljana-2687912_1280-768x511.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/ljubljana-2687912_1280.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Slovenia&#8217;s capital city, Ljubljana, was named one of the greenest cities in Europe by Greenpeace because of how environmentally sustainable it is. It also has a low murder rate at only 11 per 100,000 people.</p>

<p>Slovenia&#8217;s health care system is ranked as the best in the world &#8211; it spends more money on its citizens&#8217; health than any other country. Slovenia even has free access to abortion and emergency contraception for all women over 18 years old. And because it&#8217;s such a small country, its cost of living is also relatively low.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="bratislava">Bratislava</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bratislava_129-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8617" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bratislava_129-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bratislava_129-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bratislava_129-768x512.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/bratislava_129.jpg 1254w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia, is perhaps the most affordable place to live on this list &#8211; it ranks as having one of the most affordable rental markets and property taxes in Europe. Plus, Slovakian food is healthier than the Western European diet.</p>

<p>Slovakia has a much lower homicide rate at only 10 per 100,000 people, and it also has a decent health care system. The literacy rate there is surprisingly high &#8211; 99 percent of Slovaks can read and write. And if you&#8217;re looking for a country with a rich historical background, Slovakia is an excellent choice &#8211; it has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="frequently-asked-questions-about-living-in-central-europe">Frequently Asked Questions about Living in Central Europe</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="what-is-the-weather-like-in-central-europe">What is the weather like in Central Europe?</h3>

<p>Well, most of it sits on the border between temperate and continental climate zones. This means that temperatures do vary across countries, but they are usually cool enough for you to need a coat most of the time, even in summer. If your fun idea includes having sunshine at least some of the time, this is not really the place for you.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="640" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_130666263-1024x640.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-8618" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_130666263-1024x640.jpeg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_130666263-300x188.jpeg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_130666263-768x480.jpeg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_130666263-1536x960.jpeg 1536w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Prague_130666263.jpeg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="what-is-the-food-like-in-central-europe">What is the food like in Central Europe?</h3>

<p>Pretty good! Germany, in particular, is known for its beer and sausages. You can get both pretty much anywhere in the region. As for the rest of it, there are some countries where you might be disappointed. But take heart &#8211; even if your national cuisine didn&#8217;t make it to the region, you can still probably find it in one of the neighboring countries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="how-expensive-is-central-europe">How expensive is Central Europe?</h3>

<p>For most people who live outside the region, Central Europe is quite reasonably priced. There are some more expensive places to visit. Still, on average, your travel expenses will be lower than they would be for other European destinations &#8211; some of them even rival Asian countries in that respect.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="conclusion">Conclusion</h3>

<p>Living in Central Europe can be an enriching experience. The varied history, culture, and gastronomy have all made the countries of Central Europe into fabulous destinations for those wishing to live abroad. However, it&#8217;s essential to know the best cities suitable for you to live in. You can refer to this guide for more.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="some-religious-traditions-remain-very-popular">Some Religious Traditions Remain Very Popular</h3>

<p>For example, there is the tradition of lighting candles on Christmas Eve to help guide Mary and Joseph to their new home. This ritual takes place in many homes across Central Europe, especially in Poland. Another custom (and less widespread) is eating fried carp.</p>

<p>On Christmas Eve, a whole fried fish would be placed on the table and blessed by a priest. Each family member would take a piece of the fish and eat it while saying &#8220;thank you&#8221; to whoever provided them with carp that year. It was believed that whoever ate this fish had good health for the upcoming year.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="festivals-are-incredibly-popular-in-central-europe">Festivals Are Incredibly Popular In Central Europe</h3>

<p>There&#8217;s an important tradition in Poland surrounding St. Mary&#8217;s Day, which takes place on the 25th of July each year. It is celebrated with a special bread known as &#8216;chleb świętomarciński,&#8217; created using flour, water, and salt &#8211; ingredients that must be blessed before they are used to make the bread.</p>

<p>People buy this particular bread and take it to the cemetery, where they leave pieces on the graves of their family members. Also found in Polish culture is Wianki &#8211; a festival around May each year. It&#8217;s a springtime celebration and involves people throwing wreaths made from flowers into rivers or lakes.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="a-huge-focus-on-food">A Huge Focus on Food</h3>

<p>Central Europe is known for its hearty dishes! Most people enjoy eating potatoes, dumplings, and cabbage as part of their main meals. One dish that can be found in almost every town across Poland is Barszcz &#8211; a soup made from beetroot which has been prepared many different ways over the years.</p>

<p>To make it, the beetroot is cut into pieces before being fried with onion. Once it&#8217;s tender, the mixture is covered in water and left to simmer for about an hour.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="people-enjoy-visiting-local-pubs">People Enjoy Visiting Local Pubs</h3>

<p>Though beer has been trendy in Central Europe since the Middle Ages, the region has also become well known for its pubs and breweries. In the Czech Republic, people end up in a pub once they&#8217;ve left the office at the end of the day.</p>

<p>Craving a sweet treat? You can try kolache, a delicious pastry stuffed with fruit or cream cheese that has been popular since WWII. If you&#8217;d rather save room for dinner, you could ask for schnapps to take your kolache down with.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="many-languages-are-spoken-throughout-the-region">Many Languages Are Spoken Throughout the Region</h3>

<p>You may think that Central Europe is a single country, but it actually consists of many independent states. Each one has its language &#8211; Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovakian, and Slovenian are all commonly spoken.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="best-tourists-attractions-available-in-central-europe">Best Tourists Attractions Available in Central Europe</h2>

<p>Tourism in Europe has been on the rise for a number of years, and this trend doesn&#8217;t seem likely to change in the near future. People from all over the world come to visit majestic cities, historical landmarks, and unique natural features.</p>

<p>The countries in Central Europe are often overlooked by tourists who instead flock to crowded streets and beaches in southern Europe or opt for the relative affordability of destinations in the east.</p>

<p>While these places all hold their own charm and beauty, Central Europe is home to a number of hidden gems &#8211; waiting to be explored. If you&#8217;re looking for some off-the-beaten-path tourist attractions available in central Europe, this list will help you get started.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="1-museums-of-budapest">1)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Museums of Budapest</h3>

<p>Budapest is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe, if not the world. Tourists come for its beautiful architecture, great food, and vibrant nightlife. But there&#8217;s something they don&#8217;t know about &#8211; literally beneath their feet.</p>

<p>A massive network of tunnels built by prisoners during World War II stretches under much of central Budapest. The locals call it the &#8220;mole people&#8221; metro, and it&#8217;s a popular tourist attraction these days. Visitors can take guided tours of the underground system to experience what life was like for prisoners of war, or they can just wander through some of the open tunnels on their own.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="2-mausoleum-of-mustafa-kemal-ataturk">2)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk</h3>

<p>Atatürk is the founder of modern Turkey. His famous mausoleum lies in a forest about an hour outside Ankara, surrounded by green fields and wildflowers. People from all over Turkey come to pay their respects at this tomb, so foreign tourists know less. But if you want to see a truly unique place that very few people know about, this is it.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="3-castle-of-hrad-kulm">3)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Castle of Hrad Kulm</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="633" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Cesky_Krumlov_zamek_cely_z_vyhlidky-1024x633.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8598" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Cesky_Krumlov_zamek_cely_z_vyhlidky-1024x633.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Cesky_Krumlov_zamek_cely_z_vyhlidky-300x185.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Cesky_Krumlov_zamek_cely_z_vyhlidky-768x475.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Cesky_Krumlov_zamek_cely_z_vyhlidky-1536x950.jpg 1536w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Cesky_Krumlov_zamek_cely_z_vyhlidky.jpg 1598w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Hrad Kulm is situated among picturesque mountain peaks in the Czech Republic. The castle has stood here for centuries, providing shelter to everyone from medieval knights to World War II refugees. Today visitors can climb up to the castle itself and admire the beautiful views offered by its location.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="4-trosky-castle">4)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Trosky Castle</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/40809216933_736c93478c_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8599" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/40809216933_736c93478c_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/40809216933_736c93478c_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/40809216933_736c93478c_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Trosky is a massive 14th-century fortress located on the border of the Czech Republic and Poland. It&#8217;s one of those places that don’t just offer some great tourist attractions &#8211; it simply offers, period! The majestic building looks as if it&#8217;s straight out of a fairy tale. Rumor has it that locals can see far-away Warsaw from the highest tower.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="5-the-bridge-at-mostar">5)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stari_Most" data-type="URL" data-id="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stari_Most" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bridge at Mostar</a></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/48999773723_c1130df224_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8600" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/48999773723_c1130df224_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/48999773723_c1130df224_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/48999773723_c1130df224_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The bridge was built in the 16th century to connect two sides of the city, divided between Bosnians and Croatians today. It became famous during the 1990s war thanks to its destruction and the famous photo of a woman crying over the loss. It has since been rebuilt and is now one of Mostar&#8217;s top tourist attractions, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="6-the-abbey-at-westmalle">6)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Abbey at Westmalle</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="530" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1314x680px-Westmalle_Abbey_1-1024x530.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8601" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1314x680px-Westmalle_Abbey_1-1024x530.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1314x680px-Westmalle_Abbey_1-300x155.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1314x680px-Westmalle_Abbey_1-768x397.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/1314x680px-Westmalle_Abbey_1.jpg 1314w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The abbey is in northern Belgium, surrounded by beautiful green fields and grazing cows. This is where they make the famous Westmalle Trappist beers, but you don&#8217;t need to be a beer connoisseur to appreciate the atmosphere here. Not only is it extremely peaceful and relaxing, but the abbey itself has been beautifully preserved over time as well.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="7-tropie-water-tower">7)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tropie Water Tower</h3>

<p>The Tropie Water Tower in Belgium is an art deco monument that looks like something straight out of a spy movie. It&#8217;s located in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by green fields and cows. There are several water towers just like it all around Europe, but this one is probably the most famous &#8211; if only because it&#8217;s so hard to find.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="8-ice-hotel">8)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ice Hotel</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/5272472406_632984d968_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8602" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/5272472406_632984d968_b.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/5272472406_632984d968_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/5272472406_632984d968_b-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Luxury hotels are one of the top tourist attractions available in central Europe, but why just settle for a stay anywhere when you can have a night at the world&#8217;s first permanent ice hotel? The Ice Hotel is located in Sweden and offers simply fantastic views of Lapland.</p>

<p>It has been rebuilt every year out of completely new, fresh snow and ice. The materials are sourced locally, so this is definitely a unique experience worth trying at least once in your life!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="9-wieliczka-salt-mines">9)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Wieliczka Salt Mines</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1023" height="680" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2745842357_314e9ddc33_b.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8603" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2745842357_314e9ddc33_b.jpg 1023w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2745842357_314e9ddc33_b-300x199.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2745842357_314e9ddc33_b-768x510.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1023px) 100vw, 1023px" /></figure>

<p>Wieliczka Salt Mines have been around since the 13th century &#8211; which makes them one of the oldest attractions on our list. They were officially closed for business in 1996, but you can still take an underground tour of this massive complex. The winding tunnels are only lit by candlelight, giving them a mystical atmosphere that&#8217;s hard to describe.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="10-bled-island">10) Bled Island</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/71352031-Aerial-view-by-drone-of-Bled-Island-with-the-Church-of-the-Assumption-at-dawn-Lake-Bled-Upper-Carniola-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8604" srcset="https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/71352031-Aerial-view-by-drone-of-Bled-Island-with-the-Church-of-the-Assumption-at-dawn-Lake-Bled-Upper-Carniola-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/71352031-Aerial-view-by-drone-of-Bled-Island-with-the-Church-of-the-Assumption-at-dawn-Lake-Bled-Upper-Carniola-300x225.jpg 300w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/71352031-Aerial-view-by-drone-of-Bled-Island-with-the-Church-of-the-Assumption-at-dawn-Lake-Bled-Upper-Carniola-768x576.jpg 768w, https://expats.adamfayed.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/71352031-Aerial-view-by-drone-of-Bled-Island-with-the-Church-of-the-Assumption-at-dawn-Lake-Bled-Upper-Carniola.jpg 1100w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Bled Island is located in Slovenia, and it&#8217;s famous for three things: one of the most photographed kindergartens in the world, a church that offers exceptional views of Lake Bled and its surroundings, and a tiny island called Pokljuka. This is one of the most tranquil spots on our list &#8211; all you can hear are church bells ringing in the background and birds singing everywhere.</p>
