Living In Egypt As A Digital Nomad part 1 – that will be the topic of today’s article.

Before introducing this article, if you are interested in our core services which are expat financial, insurance and mortgages, you can contact me here.

The best time to consider your financial situation is when you are moving to a new country.

Introduction

Egypt is a beautiful country with an ancient history covering over five thousand years. It has yet to be surpassed by any other country in the number of tourist visitors each year, making this country one of the most visited countries in the world.

The Giza pyramids, Luxor temple, and Alexandria library are some of Egypt’s biggest tourist attractions, but there are four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, putting Egypt on par with countries like France and China. Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is known as one of the most violent cities in the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting or living in.

When you first land at Cairo airport, you’ll literally be met by a swarm of people all asking you where you’re going and trying to get your taxi fare quoted before you even see the price on the meter. The first time it happened, I thought we had happened upon an organized mafia operation or that they were professionals at scamming foreigners into overpaying for taxis.

But, it turns out that was far from the truth. In Cairo, if you don’t look foreign, you’ll get quoted a lower price for everything. Whereas tourists will pay around 20 Egyptian pounds to cross a bridge, local Cairenes will only pay one pound on the same bridge. We took every opportunity we could to save some money during our time in the country, and that meant negotiating over just about everything.

Have you been craving to become a digital nomad in Egypt? If your answer sounds like a YES, you’ve landed on the right platform. Today, in this article, we will walk you through the ultimate guide to living in Egypt as an expat. We have compiled the benefits, best places to stay, and many others. Read further!

What to Know about Digital Nomad Life in Egypt

You’ve probably heard of digital nomads. They are entrepreneurs who have decided to embrace travel and not only that – they make their living while traveling around the world. They don’t have a fixed home address, instead opting for hotel rooms or AirBnb’s when they need to sleep.

I am one of these nomads, and I live in Egypt. Here are the things you should know if you want to get started with digital nomad life here:

It’s Not All about the Internet

Many people think of working from a cafe when they hear ‘digital nomad’ – and while that can be part of your day, it isn’t the only option. Many cafes are overpriced, and noise levels can make it difficult to work.

That’s why most digital nomads living in Egypt will rent an apartment with a good internet connection, but not necessarily much else – no kitchen, no clean water supply (they buy bottles of drinking water), and sometimes even no furniture.

Travel on a Budget

If you’re used to the western world, Egypt might come as a shock to your system. Even if you are used to very cheap countries, Egypt can significantly decrease your spending power because of the Egyptian Pound’s weakness against other currencies, which leads me to my next point.

Leave Your Western Lifestyle At Home

If you want to be a digital nomad, you will need to leave many of the conveniences and amenities that we take for granted back home. You won’t have debit/credit cards (you can get an Egyptian ATM card, though), clean drinking water, good roads, comfortable transport options, reliable electricity, and many others. Nowadays, you can’t even rely on Google Maps to work in Egypt.

Plan and Be Open-Minded

You will benefit from keeping your schedule flexible because Egyptian life is not very organized. You will also need to accept that many things won’t go the way you planned them (or even the way that anyone planned them). If you can’t accept this and still work effectively, you probably shouldn’t be considering digital nomad life in Egypt.

Be Social, But Not Too Social

In Cairo, you will have a great opportunity to meet people from all around the world. However, being social is one of the best ways to get into trouble in Egypt. If you get too friendly with Egyptian people, they can sometimes expect repayment (especially financially). You do not need to give them gifts/money/help, and the sooner you learn this better.

You Can Get By With Basic Arabic

While it would be great to speak the local language if you want to move out of resorts and tourist areas, it isn’t necessary. Many people living in Egypt as digital nomads have no more than a few key phrases in Arabic.

The best way to learn is through casual conversation with people who you meet during your daily life, then learning a more complex language when you want to start exploring the country a bit further.

Get Used To Power Cuts

The majority of Egypt has an unstable electric supply. Power cuts are often short but can also last up to six hours in some parts of the city. This can be inconvenient because it can make digital nomad work a little more difficult.

Meanwhile, the only time it is really annoying is if you’re trying to do something that requires constant power. As for charging your electronic devices, most cafes have sockets and will let you charge while you’re drinking coffee.

Work Out of Coffee Shops

There are three main problems with coffee shops that keep people away from them when trying to work. The first is that they can be incredibly noisy, which means you’ll have problems finding a seat in the cafe if it’s even open.

Another problem is that many cafes in Egypt don’t have fast internet connections, so working outside your apartment is not always an option. The final problem is the price of coffee – it’s usually very high compared to local standards, which can make work unaffordable for some digital nomads.

There Is No Single Digital Nomad Scene

Even though the digital nomad lifestyle has become very popular in Egypt, there is not a single hub where everyone hangs out. Many travels to Cairo every so often to work from Hub 64, but most stay away because of the high prices and noise levels.

Likewise, many nomads meet up for coffee or lunch, but there are no permanent places where someone can go to work on their laptop all day. You’ll have to do some searching to find the right places that suit your needs.

Don’t Think Of It as ‘Travel.’

Many people who live in Egypt for a year or two think of it as a lifestyle they would like to keep forever. It’s not uncommon to feel homesick and long for your friends and family throughout your time here, but the main point of the digital nomad life is that you can live and work from anywhere in the world. Therefore, if you want to make Egypt into a new home, what do you do?

You can try to transfer your visa, but it’s a long process involving lots of paperwork and guarantors. Because you’re staying in Egypt on a self-employed visa, your yearly income needs to be at least 3500 USD before the embassy considers letting you move from a tourist visa to a residency permit. You also need two guarantors in Egypt who share their income details with the embassy.

The other option is to get a job in Egypt rather than rely on remote work alone. Arabic is very different from English, but most jobs require good English skills (usually up to an intermediate level). Look for jobs in international companies or even embassies.

Living In Egypt As A Digital Nomad part 2 – Part one is here.

Pros and Cons of Being a Digital Nomad in Egypt

Digital nomads are a relatively new but quickly growing group of people who work online from different locations worldwide. In recent years, it has been becoming more and more popular for people to quit their day jobs and become location independent freelancers or entrepreneurs.

While this is an amazing opportunity for some people, there are many barriers that someone faces when they decide to work from a new country. In this section, you will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a digital nomad in Egypt.

Advantages

1. You Can Work From Anywhere

If you enjoy the freedom to work from anywhere, then moving abroad as a digital nomad can really make life easier for you. Of course, there are many places where this is true, but not all of them are cheap places to live.

Egypt is an affordable place, but it’s also full of history and culture to explore, making it the perfect place to be if you want work/life balance.

2. Great Value for Money

Another great benefit of becoming a digital nomad in Egypt is that everything is so cheap compared to other places in Europe or North America. Rent, food, and entertainment are all incredibly affordable here.

This means you will have more money to spend on doing things like enjoying trips at the weekends. Also, if you are spending less on your living expenses, this means you will have more money to save up so that you can eventually afford to travel for longer.

3. Awesome Food

Being able to enjoy delicious food as a digital nomad in Egypt is one of the best things about living here. The country has a long and varied history, and this shows through in its cuisine with everything from traditional dishes like Koshari and Ful Medames to Turkish Delights and Baklava.

Even if you live in Cairo, you can get these great dishes for low prices. If you want to try something different every day, then this is definitely the place to be.

4. You Can Save Money Easily

Again, because everything is so cheap in Egypt compared with other places in the world, it means that living here is actually good for your bank account. By eating local foods, shopping at markets, and buying cheap entertainment like DVDs or video games, you can save a lot of money each month.

This also means that if you are ever stuck for cash, you won’t need to worry too much. This is great news if you want the freedom to work on your own terms without worrying about money.

5. Great for Adventures

If you want to get out of the city and discover Egypt’s amazing desserts, white-sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters, then this is definitely the place to go. By taking day trips or even getting a car and setting off into the desert on an overnight safari, you can really see some different country areas.

This means that you can have lots of mini-adventures when you live here, which is great to ensure life isn’t too boring. And of course, if you ever get tired of all the culture and history here in Egypt, then you can always escape for a few days and go somewhere different.

Disadvantages

Getting around in a place with no addresses

Language Barrier

Privacy Issues

Taxes and Fees

Constant electricity problems

Getting Around In A Place with No Addresses

This is easily avoidable if you use Maps.me (or another offline map app), but I get lost at least once or twice whenever I step out of my apartment. It can be very frustrating when you’re trying to figure out where the heck you are, and you have a million streets all named the same thing.

Even though I know, it’s partly my fault since I haven’t gotten fully adjusted to Egyptian street names (and their lack thereof).

Language Barrier

Although I speak basic Arabic and can get by decently well in Egypt, there are definitely some things that words just don’t describe. Like how to order food, what you should do if lost, prices for certain products in local markets, etc. Many foreigners have gotten scammed or ripped off because they just can’t communicate with the people working there.

Privacy Issues

There’s not much privacy here in any aspect of life except when you’re working or looking for work. Everyone has this idea of what a digital nomad should be, and you’re always being judged on whether or not you fit that image. Some people will think that they can haggle your prices down because, after all, it’s just online business, right? You don’t need to pay rent or anything

Taxes and Fees

The taxes here are pretty high compared to the rest of the world, especially with renting an apartment or a car… But at least you don’t have to pay any income tax. However, there are also plenty of fees everywhere, from airport security charges to internet service provider fees.

Constant Electricity Problems

It’s very unwise to go traveling in a country that has constant power outages and where you can’t really predict when it’ll happen next. Since most of the time, your laptop won’t even work when you need it most. Whenever I’m in an area with Wi-Fi, I try my best to save all the pictures I want to print, just in case the internet goes out for a couple of days or more.

5 Best Cafes with Wi-Fi in Egypt

It is no new dream for many workers to be able to work while traveling. Who doesn’t want to work remotely on a beach or a cozy island? No doubt, if you have worked remotely, the fantasy of doing your work elsewhere than on your couch is definitely a reoccurring one. After all, with a strong internet connection, you can work from any corner of the world. And when conventional workers discovered this, digital nomadism was born.

The onset of the Covid 19 pandemic started a new era in the commercial and tourism world. For the commercial world—most employees accustomed to a face-to-face work system had to adapt to a new way of working from home.

Nonetheless, the covid 19 eras are slowly fading away, and workers are now returning to their workplace to continue their remote work. Peradventure, you are one of those workers, and you wish to participate in digital nomadism and want to know the countries that are available for it. Keep reading!

Digital nomadism is more of a lifestyle than a job. It is the combination of work, money, tourism, and to add it all up, it makes your work more fun. Plus, workers that have jobs with affiliation with creativity would be perfect for this.

Now, what’s a better way to get inspiration than the cool breeze from a beach in Costa Rica? In this article, we’ve got you covered! And we will walk you through the countries that are open to expats and digital nomads. Please read the full article to get a glimpse of what we’ve unleashed.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa, and Which Countries Offer it?

To understand how a digital nomad visa works, the definition of what a digital nomad is necessary. A digital nomad is a remote worker with a nomadic lifestyle and uses the internet to work remotely outside the country they normally live in.

Now that the definition of a digital nomad is set in stone, you can understand digital nomad visas better. Digital Nomad Visa is a document that gives you the right to work remotely in a country that you don’t permanently live in.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the world has changed and is still evolving. More so, no sector has experienced this change other than the travel sector and where we work. Countries with tourism-dependent revenue keep suffering from it, and not many people are willing to travel yet. Nonetheless, tourism moves the income of many countries, which inspired the approval of new work visas, including the digital nomad visa and visas for tourism by expats.

A Detailed Guide of Countries Offering Digital Nomad Visas in July 2021

ANTIGUA & BARBUDA

Antigua and Barbuda offer a visa called the nomad digital residency. This visa is specific to digital nomads that are capable of supporting themselves and family members. The visa spans two years, and to benefit from it, and you would need to get a health insurance plan.

How to get an “NDR” Nomad Digital Residency Visa

To get the visa so you can be a digital nomad in Antigua and Barbuda, there are three brief steps you have to follow.

First, you fill up their online application form here.

Tender a police background check and your proof of employment.

Lastly, you pay a sum of 1,500 for one, 2,000 for two (a couple), and 3,000 for a family of three or more.

BARBADOS

Barbados is another country on the list of digital nomad accepting countries. Not too long ago, the country started to offer a Barbados welcome stamp. This stamp provides a one-year working vacation visa for digital nomads. The visa price, more so, is $2000 for a person and $3000 for families.

Requirements

You must own a location-independent business. If you don’t, you should work remotely for an organization that isn’t based in Barbados.

You have to have a minimum annual income of $50,000.

Lastly, a compulsory Covid19 test must be taken. Plus, a mandatory two days quarantine at arrival.

How to Get Barbados Welcome Stamp

The first step is to fill their online application form.

Next, you pay for the stamp. The stamp goes for about $2000.

Bermuda

Bermuda launched a new visa program, “work from Bermuda, for digital nomads and remote workers. The program aims to permit workers and students alike to work remotely on their beautiful island stress-free.

The country claims that they are set to admit workers as long as they have electric car rentals, multiple co-working spaces, a vacation that would allow digital nomads and expats to have a nice time for the period of one year on the island. A fascinating part of this offer is it doesn’t have any minimum income requirement.

The Conditions for the Visa Program

You must own a location-independent business. If you don’t, you should work remotely for an organization that isn’t based in Bermuda.

You tender proof of your travel insurance.

How to get it

Go online and fill up their application form.

Submit all of the required paperwork and pay a sum of $263 as a Visa fee.

Cayman Islands

The department of tourism of Cayman islands recently launched a specific visa for digital nomads that is called the “Global Citizen Concierge Program (GCCP).” This visa allows digital nomads to work and live in their country for two years.

For the Cayman Islands, the minimum income requirement is a bit more than that of other countries that permit digital nomadism. If you haven’t moved or you still plan to move, the income requirement might serve as a push to becoming a six-figure earner.

Digital nomads that have the Cayman Islands as a country of interest must have a minimum income requirement of $100,000 if you are alone and a minimum income requirement of $150,000 if you are a couple.

Note, Germany has another visa as well; this visa, “Aufenthaltserlaubnis für selbständige Tätigkeit,” allows digital nomads and freelancers to work remotely and live in Germany from 6 months to 3 years.

Furthermore, the visa program has an age limit. Only people between the ages of 16 and 35 can qualify. There is not much about this visa program. It is advisable to reach out to any Australian embassies in your area and make certain information about this visa program as some specific details are attached to the visa program.

Portugal

Portugal, unlike other countries, doesn’t only offer a temporary resident visa to digital nomads, but a resident permit. This type has the potential of being extended up to 5 years.
Spain offers another type of visa. This visa is the “start-up law visa.” This program permits citizens from other countries to enter Spain to work, live, and make start-ups in the country for a year.

Lastly, Spain offers one more visa. This visa is called the Non-lucrative visa. All that this visa entails is that you are not allowed to work. The government seeks to admit foreign citizens that are retired and self-sufficient. The visa lasts for a year, but there is a possibility for an extension.

Montserrat

Montserrat offers digital nomads a new program called Montserrat Remote Work Stamp. This stamp allows digital nomads to live and work on this island for a year. Plus, if you are happy with your stay, you can request an extension.

MAURITIUS

Mauritius is an island that just boarded the digital nomadism train. Eligible digital nomads can live and work on the island for a year and renew the visa when a year expires. Plus, for now, the application is free.

All the countries above have approved digital nomadism. However, some countries intend to support digital nomadism soon. The government has started, and you should be expecting these countries to open to digital nomads soon. The countries are:

Cape Town

Greece

Indonesia

Romania

Thailand

Sri Lanka

Countries That Open for Expats

More so, apart from countries open to digital nomads, there are also countries that are open to expats even in this covid 19 era as of July 2021. Here is a list of all the countries available to tourism and expats:

Africa Travel Update

Egypt

Mali

Burkina Faso

Mauritania

Morocco

Somalia

South of Sudan

Sudan

Conclusion

Many countries are open to expats, and by the end of the year, the governments of several countries will render their country available to expats. Nonetheless, for the ones that are opened as of July 2021, it is important that expats and digital nomads put the prevalence of Covid-19 in mind. Most countries would require proof of vaccination and a mandatory 48 – 72 hours quarantine period. So if you’re ready to take a trip, be prepared as regards Covid 19.

More so, it is important to do adequate research before selecting your country of choice. As outlined above, ensure that you fit all of the requirements as that’s the only way you can be thoroughly prepared and get the visa you want.
