Cambodia Vs Laos For Expats part 2 – Part one is here.

Which One Is The Best, Cambodia Or Laos?

Kampot, Sihanoukville, or Siem Reap? In terms of tourist spots, the two small countries of Cambodia and Laos are both top destinations in Southeast Asia. However, despite sharing borders with Thailand, Vietnam, and China, neither country patches its dominant neighbors.

Whereas Thais flock to Bangkok and head to Phuket or Koh Samui, the number of Vietnamese in Saigon pales with the hordes visiting Hanoi or Halong Bay. Cambodia is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia for a good reason.

With Angkor Wat at its heart, it’s brimming with gorgeous temples. And thanks to a massive archaeological excavation project in the 60s and 70s. The French colonial architecture of Phnom Penh is a delight to explore; there’s some brilliant shopping at places like Psar Tuol Tom Pong and Sorya Market.

Also, you’ll enjoy the nightlife scene once you escape from the city center. This place is great, with a whole host of bars and clubs that stay open late. The road to Sihanoukville is a particularly picturesque lake-side drive where you can see the sunrise over the water if you’re sneaky enough to get up early.

Of course, not everyone wishes to leave their resort or hotel room for much of the trip, and that’s where Laos comes in. The country has a lot of luxurious spas and resorts where you can recharge your batteries in style.

And there’s plenty to do even if you’re not staying at such places. The rejuvenating properties of the thousands of elephants (for hire) that roam freely around Laos cannot be overstated. Seriously, one ride on an elephant is enough to rejuvenate you for a week.

So, we can tell you that Cambodia is pretty awesome. But, what about Laos? For all the backpackers who’ve been to Southeast Asia, it’s one of those countries that tend to come with a few caveats. Firstly poverty is quite depressing, even after you’ve just come from Thailand or Cambodia.

Interesting Facts about Living in Laos

You may think that you would never want to leave your home country and relocate somewhere completely different, but for many people around the world, this is a dream come true. There are so many things in foreign countries that we cannot see from our own homes, and it is great to get out there and explore them!

Laos Has an Incredible Amount of Biodiversity

The fact that Laos has so much land covered in tropical forests is incredible, but even more impressive is the fact that this home country to roughly 6 million people has an estimated 5,000 species of vascular plants – that’s almost 1,000 different types of plant per 100 square kilometers. This is due to the country’s unique geology, which contains a mixture of volcanic mountain ranges and alluvial plains.

The People Have a Unique Culture

The culture in Laos has remained unchanged for centuries. The Laotian people are a relaxed bunch who value their lives outside of work to be filled with family and friends rather than spending time in front of a computer. Another unique aspect of the Laos people is their dress code, which is quite formal compared to western countries.

People Speak More Than One Language

For most westerners, this is no surprise; after all, many people learn an additional language or two throughout life – but for those who are new to learning languages, it can be a bit overwhelming to see that there are over 20 languages spoken throughout the country.

The Weather Is Always Changing

The one thing that you can rely on in Laos, regardless of which part of the country you are in, is that the weather will be ever-changing. This means that it’s very important to have clothes for all types of weather – whether it be blistering cold or unbearably humid. It is advisable to pack a variety of clothing to suit a range of temperatures, as well as a raincoat and umbrella.

Laos Is Still Very Rural

One thing that many people find interesting about Laos is that no matter how far into the country they go, it still has a very rural feel to it. In fact, even though the country’s population has increased significantly since the 1950s, there are still less than 5 million people living here.

This is largely due to the fact that many of the Laotian people live outside of formal housing – often traveling from place to place to farm their crops. This means that you will have plenty of opportunities to interact with locals who don’t live in big cities and follow formal customs.

The Food Is Safe To Eat

Due to the rural nature of Laos, many people are concerned about the cleanliness of Laos food. However, this should not be a concern because all food (including water) is carefully monitored by health officials who ensure that it is safe for Laotians and tourists alike to consume.

There Are a Range of Unique Festivals

Festivals play a major role in the culture of Laos, and there is one to celebrate any occasion throughout the year. The Laotian calendar is packed with amazing events, from New Year’s Day to Khao Pansa – all of which are interesting in their own way. Also, the Laotian people are very friendly and will often invite you to participate in their festivities if they see that you are not doing anything.

Why Choosing Cambodia Over Laos

The Monarchy

Cambodia is the only country in mainland Southeast Asia to have a constitutional monarchy, making it one of the unique experiences you can find. The palace provides amazing insight into Khmer culture while also leaving room for exploration.

Siem Reap

The town of Siem Reap lies adjacent to Angkor Wat, the crown jewel of Southeast Asia. The temples are magical, and Siem Reap is a vibrant town rich with history and colorful locals. Besides, you can’t beat the food and nightlife. So, when you’re done with the temples, load up on some BBQ and beer and let loose.

Thai Border Town

The little-known border town of Poipet has transformed into a popular destination for backpackers in recent years, thanks to one of the unique markets in the world. The border market is a one-of-a-kind experience, and it couldn’t be found anywhere else in South East Asia.

The Beaches

While you’ll find some incredible beaches throughout Laos, Cambodia has the most pristine coastline with beautiful white sand, clear blue water, and tropical islands to explore. Also, take advantage of the Tonle Sap Lake, which is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.

Transportation

Cambodia’s transportation network is the best in Southeast Asia, hands down. You can travel by plane, train, or bus with ease and efficiency that rivals even some of the largest cities in the world. Moreover, international options abound, and it’s easy to get to and from neighboring countries.

Food

The food scene in Cambodia is intensely varied since ingredients are relatively easy to come by, and people are extremely resourceful. You can find food from all over the world and at reasonable prices, which will provide a culinary adventure that’s hard to match in Southeast Asia.

Standard of Living

Though Cambodia is still emerging, but it has come a long way in recent years. The standard of living is above most other countries in the region, allowing expats to live comfortably while enjoying affordable healthcare and utilities. In comparison, Laos lacks in this department. This way, Cambodia wins out overall.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laos vs. Cambodia

What do you call the person who lives in Laos?

The proper term for a person from Laos is “Lao.” “Laotian” is considered offensive by many Lao people. There are exceptions to this rule, however, as some Laotian Americans use it to distinguish between themselves and other groups of overseas Lao people.

What do you call the language of Laos?

Lao is the official language of Laos, where it is spoken as a first language by the majority of the population. Lao people, speakers of this language, are called “Lao” in English. However, some prefer to use the French-influenced term “Laotian.”

What do you call someone who is from Cambodia?

People from Cambodia are often called “Cambodian.” However, Cambodians themselves will sometimes use the word “Khmer” to distinguish between other groups of overseas Cambodians. Also, the word “Cambodian” is sometimes considered offensive by Cambodian people, as it was once used to refer disparagingly to the population of earlier Cambodia.

What is the difference between Laos and Cambodia?

Laos and Cambodia are often confused because they have some superficial similarities. Both countries are in Southeast Asia, on the western shore of the Indochinese peninsula. Also, they both used to be part of French Indochina, a “haphazardly constructed state composed of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos” (Library of Congress).

Is Laos safe for expat?

Many expats enjoy living in Laos, as it has an affordable cost of living and several natural attractions. However, some international organizations caution against travel to Laos due to unexploded bombs leftover from the Vietnam War era.

Conclusion

It is always difficult to choose a place to live with so many options. If you ask someone in the U.S. which country they would like to live in, for example, they might say Thailand or Canada. Is one of these countries better than the other? It depends on who you ask and why they want to leave the U.S., Cambodia, or Laos? Well, the choice is yours to decide.

Cambodia Vs Laos For Expats part 1 – that will be the topic of today’s article.

Before introducing this article, if you are interested in our core services which are expat financial, insurance and mortgages, you can contact me here.

The best time to consider your financial situation is when you are moving to a new country.

Introduction

Cambodia and Laos may be neighbors, but they are different in more ways than their proximity would lead you to believe. Both countries have a long history of political unrest and foreign intervention, which has led to a unique coexistence within the cultures.

However, when expats compare Cambodia vs. Laos for moving or retiring abroad from either country, Cambodia usually wins out. The decision to move or retire abroad can be difficult, especially when moving to a developing country.

If expats compare Cambodia vs. Laos, they will see that both countries have pros and cons. Without further ado, here’s our comparison of Cambodia vs. Laos for expats.

Cambodia Offers a Low Cost of Living

Cambodia is much more affordable than its neighbor, Laos. The lagging economy in Laos makes everything more expensive, including imported goods that are subject to high tariffs instead of the cheaper local products.

This means that it’s harder to find basic amenities like toilet paper or eggs for sale in Laos. Even something as simple as rice is more expensive in Laos. In Cambodia, you can find many of these amenities at a reasonable price.

In addition to cheaper basic items, everything from restaurants to housing is less expensive in Cambodia. Expats set up shop in Cambodia because it’s a great place to stretch their dollars and live well for less. This makes the country ideal for expats on a budget.

Laos Is Still Recovering From Its War-Torn Past

Cambodia has had political unrest in the past, but it’s nothing compared to Laos’ turbulent history. The Vietnam War spilled over into Laos, turning parts into battlegrounds or strategic strongholds by opposing forces.

This created an atmosphere of political instability that rocked the country until 1991. Even today, Laos is still recovering from the years it spent dealing with civil war.

However, this fact about Cambodia vs. Laos can benefit some expats. The lack of development in Laos leaves it much more like the unspoiled beauty that attracted expats to the country in the first place.

Understanding the Concept of Relocating

This is where things get interesting. If you are looking for a Southeast Asian experience, you may want to consider moving or retiring abroad in Thailand instead of Cambodia or Laos. The beaches are great, the food is delicious, and it’s an amazing place to retire.

Or you can talk to a trusted advisor who will discuss the different countries with you. They know what your financial and personal needs are, so they know where you should go. This saves time and helps you plan an upcoming relocation to a developing country that’s safe and affordable, just like Cambodia.

Pros and Cons of Living in Laos

The pros and cons of living in Laos are a topic of hot debate. Some people feel that the country is a perfect fit, while others lament that it is nothing but a third-world hellhole. The consensus seems to be that the positives of life in Laos outweigh the negatives by such a large margin. However, it makes the country a very desirable place to live.

Pros

The cost of living in Laos is extremely low. This means that you will have more disposable income on a month-by-month basis than you would in another country.

You can get paid from your home country, meaning that there is no need for an office space or coworkers around you.

Laos is not crowded, yet it has all of the benefits of modern society. It’s easier to get things done here than in most other countries.

The weather in Laos is generally quite agreeable. There are a few extremes, so you won’t have to deal with the scorching heat or bitter cold.

You’ll be able to get high-speed internet access at a very low cost.

Many expats in Laos are retired or semi-retired, meaning they have all of the free time they want to use however they please.

Cons

The Asian diet can be difficult for some people to adjust to. It is full of fish sauce and other flavors that may not appeal to everyone.

There are some cultural differences in Laos that you might find difficult to adjust to. This can be somewhat assuaged by hiring an assistant familiar with the culture.

Traffic accidents frequently happen, especially among foreign drivers. You should be very careful on the roads here, as the other drivers are extremely reckless.

Laos is not particularly safe, especially at night. You should take precautions against theft by locking up your valuables when you aren’t using them and hiring a security guard in the evenings after leaving work.

The internet access in Laos can be spotty in some parts of the country – most notably, there is a real lack of fiber optic cables in the north. Getting set up with the internet can be difficult if your neighborhood doesn’t have any service.

There are few restaurants that serve Western food, which means you’ll have to learn to cook Laotian food or eat out at an Asian restaurant. Neither option is very healthy for you, so you’ll have to find ways around that problem.

The weather in Laos can be somewhat oppressive in the summer, particularly if you aren’t used to it. Many people experience severe heatstroke when they first arrive here, especially if they are unaccustomed to 100 degree plus temperatures.

Interesting Facts about Living in Cambodia

It’s a well-known fact that Cambodia is a beautiful country full of happy, smiling people. It is also a cheap place to live compared to other countries in our region. There are so many wonderful things about living and working in Cambodia, and today we wanted to share with you five of them:

Beautiful Scenery and Natural Attractions

One of the best things about living in Cambodia is that there are many beautiful and natural attractions to visit. If you just want a nice beach day out, then look at our article on five great beaches to visit in and around Phnom Penh for some ideas.

Once you get away from the city center, you will be amazed by the amount of natural beauty, and you will find it hard to resist taking lots and lots of pictures.

No VAT or GST

There is no sales tax, value-added tax (VAT), or goods and service tax (GST) in Cambodia. This means that everything stays cheap as we buy items without paying extra. There is also no income tax, and we only have to pay social security when we earn more than $500 per month.

Not Too Hot or Too Cold

Cambodia generally has a tropical climate, so it’s quite humid throughout the year. It never gets too hot in the summer months (December-February) and doesn’t get too cold in the winter months (June-August). Most people find Cambodia has a comfortable temperature because it is always 25 degrees or more.

Amazing Local Food and Drink

The local Cambodian food and drink are so delicious and cheap! There are many restaurants to choose from, lots of street food stalls, and many local drink options. The best local food and drink options are fried noodles, spring rolls, coconut juice, and Cambodian iced coffee (we will do another article on these sometime soon).

Speaking Khmer Is Not Too Difficult

We have mentioned on this blog before that English isn’t spoken very well in Cambodia. However, speaking Khmer is actually not that difficult if you know how to speak a little bit of it. There are many words and phrases in Khmer that sound like they are straight from English, such as: “chomreap suor” (thank you), “Sabai dei” (please), and “sa ma ney” (excuse me).

Delicious and Cheap Fruit

Fruit in Cambodia is plentiful, delicious, and very cheap! We get to eat many different types of fruit from a number of different countries. Some of our favorite fruits are guava, mango, durian, lychee, and jackfruit. It probably doesn’t help that we drink a lot of fresh coconut juice.

Great Customer Service

Customer service in Cambodia is a little bit slow compared to other countries, but the quality of service we get from Cambodian people is great. They know how to treat their customers well, and they often go the extra mile just to make us happy. Most Cambodians are very humble and will not say no to anything. Compared to the people in other countries that we have visited (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos), Cambodian customer service is much better.

That being said, any traveler or expat moving to Southeast Asia should include a visit to Cambodia on their list. Here are 7 interesting facts about this vibrant country that will be sure to whet your appetite for the Kingdom of Wonder.

· The Royal Ballet

Cambodia’s Royal Ballet was founded in 1959 by Queen Sisowath Kossamak Nearyrath, mother of the current king. It has developed into one of the best ballet companies in Asia. Aside from this fact, this country is unique for its requirement that dancers be able to sing as well as dance since all performances are accompanied by an orchestra. Besides, dancers are trained rigorously in the classical tradition and performances are presented by invitation only at special state occasions.

· Angkor Wat

Angkor is a massive complex of ancient temples, shrines, palaces and other buildings constructed by the Khmer empire between the ninth century A.D. and early 15th century. This place includes numerous monuments of sandstone, laterite and brick construction.

Angkor Wat is the largest of these monuments. Not only is that, but was originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu it now honors all three of Cambodia’s main religions (Buddhism, Christianity and Islam). Today, it has become one of Cambodia’s most popular destinations for both visitors and international pilgrims.

· Kampujng Provincial Museum

Kampong is the Cambodian word for village and most provincial capitals in Cambodia have a local museum. The one in Kampong Chhnang province, where Kampung Cham is located, displays artifacts found during Angkor excavation projects which were carried out around the city of Siem Reap starting in the 1860s. The museum is housed in an old colonial building that was most recently used as the provincial hospital.

· Cuisine

Cambodia’s cuisine makes great use of fresh herbs and spices. Popular dishes include amok (fish baked with lemon grass, lime leaves, coconut milk and ginger), Nom Banh Chok (fried beef served over rice noodles) and Thit Kho (braised pork with lemon grass, ginger, garlic and fish sauce).

· The Killing Fields

2AGNBP0 Choeung Ek Genocidal Center (The Killing Fields) Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The Choeung Ek killing fields just outside of Phnom Penh are part of what was known as the S-21 prison camp. Tens of thousands were murdered here by Pol Pot’s Khymer Rouge for no reason other than their ethnicity or perceived opposition to the regime. Visitors will find a memorial stupa that houses 8,985 skulls. Not only is that, but there are many other countless personal effects the victims were forced to leave behind before being led away to their execution.

· Border Crossing

The border crossing from Thailand into Cambodia is not far from the world-famous town of Pattaya. For backpackers, it offers a gateway to the islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem which are considered by many to offer some of the best diving in Asia.

· Water Festival

This is another interesting fact about Cambodia. The Water Festival, also known as ‘Boun Bang Fai’ is celebrated in May or June. The festival is tied to the agricultural cycle and marks the end of the winter rice planting season. Moreover, It includes 3 days of parades, boat races and fireworks displays. A popular part of celebrations is lighting giant bamboo poles on fire which are then floated out into the center of rivers by groups of men holding onto ropes connected to one end of the pole.

Pros of Living in Cambodia as an Expat

1. Safety

Cambodia is generally a safe country. The crime rate is comparable to most European countries, and there are increasing efforts by the police force to crack down on bike thieves (which were anecdotally reported as being rampant).

However, the most dangerous thing in Cambodia is actually the traffic – with reckless driving, speeding through red lights, and very crowded streets. Most Cambodians are unaffected by the crime, but there are increasing reports of tourists being robbed or pick-pocketed in main cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. As always, however, exercise typical precautions at night, and don’t walk down dark alleys alone.

2. Expat Community

The expat community in Cambodia is a growing pool, and there are a lot of options to choose from regarding work. There are volunteers from various international organizations, NGOs, embassies etc. Also, English teachers have been increasing in number, ranging from full-time university lecturers to part-time private tutors.

There’s a lot of demand for teachers, and salaries are much better than in neighboring countries. In addition, there’s also a pool of expats that have been living in Cambodia for many years. This way, they can give useful information about the country and culture to those who wish to stay long-term.

3. Food

Cambodian food is delicious, as mentioned earlier, and very cheap in price. There are 3 major national dishes: amok (fish in curry), poh piah (spring rolls) and lok lak which is made of either beef or chicken stir-fried with garlic, pepper, carrot & onion served on a bed of lettuce or cabbage are quite popular.

4. Recreation

As it is a tropical country, Cambodia offers many outdoor activities for those who like to stay active. Some of the more common activities are visiting the various temples (Angkor Wat, Bayon etc), snorkeling at Sihanoukville, Kampot and other locations along the southern coast, rock climbing at Phnom Kulen and bouldering at Kracheh (close to Phnom Penh).

5. Cost of Living in Cambodia

Cambodia is an inexpensive country for expats, and in fact one of the cheapest in Southeast Asia when it comes to food, rent and general costs of living compared with Thailand or Vietnam. This way, you can easily relocate to the country, and live a good and healthy life without disturbance from third-party.

Cons of Living in Cambodia

1. Traffic

Traffic in Cambodia is chaotic and dangerous. Aside from this fact, there’s reckless driving, speeding through red lights and very crowded streets. These factors has made Cambodia has some of the most terrifying traffic in the world. Roads are narrow, congested, and cars rarely obey stoplights.

There are no lane markers on many roads, so drivers just stay near the middle of the road to avoid any collisions that might occur when they all move at once. In this case, you need to be aware of motorcyclists, who zip in and out of traffic with almost no regard for their own or others’ safety. Meanwhile, they’re not easy to spot when you’re busy looking at the chaos that is Cambodian traffic.

2. Corruption

Although there have been efforts by the government to reduce corruption in Cambodia, but it is still a major problem in the country. This is mostly due to an underpaid police force which relies on unofficial payments from motorists when they are stopped for traffic violations

3. Pollution

Pollution is another problem of living in this country as an expat. Cambodia has some of the worst pollution in the world. In fact, vehicles spew out smoke like chimneys and dust obscures your view on even a clear day.

Conclusion

If you want to get to the top positions in the world, it’s quite essential to have a volunteer experience. Notwithstanding, some companies might require a skills, but working as a volunteer could build up a relevant skills as well. In Cambodia, there are many things to explore, that’s why reading this article could be of help. Nonetheless, refer to this platform for more information about Cambodia.

Expat Visas and Work Permits in Cambodia – What’s The Updated Situation In 2021 – that will be the topic of today’s article.

Before introducing this article, if you are interested in our core services which are expat financial, insurance and mortgages, you can contact me here.

The best time to consider your financial situation is when you are moving to a new country.

Introduction

Over the past decades, more and more foreigners have been moving to Cambodia, the kingdom of Wonder. Without a doubt, the attraction of the world-famous temples of Angkor Wat is located in the country. While the nation’s rich history attracts some, others have realized its benefits.

One reason expats and tourists often give their love of Cambodia is the positive attitudes from locals. English is the country’s second language, and thanks to the growth of tourism and an increasing number of international companies entering the Cambodian market. Does that sound interesting to you?

Of course, you’ll never regret traveling to this country. They have a unique culture, and it’s even among the few countries in the world to use the U.S. dollar as the de facto currency that provides economic stability and makes life easier for her citizens. That’s why it is one of the best destinations for expat today.

However, it’s home to tons of outdoor activities. For those with a love for beaches and the ocean, the country’s leading coastal destination is Sihanoukville, which is popular with Cambodians. It offers you something for your entire tight budget, and it’s possible to live like a backpacker in a bamboo hut in the country.

There’s also a proliferation of associations and chambers of commerce such as Amcham, Eurocham, Britcham, Auscham, and many others, to mention a few. Now, we have compiled this article to highlight the expat visas and work permits updates in Cambodia. Read further to check what we have for you.

What to Know About Cambodia Visa (2021)

While you may have heard Cambodia is closed for business during the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still enter the country with compliance to strict rules and regulations in 2021. If you’re researching for a future trip, skip to the types of Cambodia visas, and check the non-pandemic updated visa situation.

As of July 22, 2021, the visa to Cambodia can only be obtained at a Cambodian embassy or consulate. Also, tourist visas are not available while the visa exemptions, electronic tickets, and visa-on-arrival have been suspended. Also, some of the land borders, including Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos, are closed. Meanwhile, those with proper visas and travel documents can still enter the country by plane.

In addition, if you want to fly to this country, you must show proof of health insurance. Aside from this fact, foreigners may also be required to purchase the 20-day COVID-19 insurance from Forte or other policies. Again, you must also have a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours before you travel.

Family members traveling together can quarantine in the same hotel room, but they are tested before you enter any room. Meanwhile, those who test positive to COVID-19 will be hospitalized at their own expense. More so, others might have asked for proof of flight or hotel booking options for visas.

Different Visa Types in Cambodia

There are numerous visas to enter Cambodia, including the eVisa. On the flip side, the type of visa you need depends on your country of residence and the reason for traveling to Cambodia. Also, it is vital to have the correct type of visa to avoid deportation. Let’s quickly dive into the classes.

Cambodia Business Visa

The Cambodia business visa is also known as the E-class visa. It is suitable for people who want to work or conduct business in Cambodia. With this kind of visa, foreign citizens can set up a business in the country without disturbance from the government. At the same time, it is prohibited for expats to buy property.

Cambodia Student Visa

If you want to apply for this kind of visa, you’ll need to provide a copy of your passport and two passport photos. Besides, the tickets are valid depending on the length of the course you apply for.

Cambodia Retirement Visa

As the name implies, the Cambodia retirement visa is meant for seniors who love to retire in Cambodia. It’s a one-year renewable visa, and you’ll need to provide proof of financial statement to support yourself and help your retiree status from your initial country of residence.

Cambodia Tourist Visa

Cambodia Visa on Arrival

Visitors can also obtain a Cambodia visa on arrival. The application is completed, and a fee is payable by your credit or debit card. Meanwhile, to save time by avoiding long lines and waiting at the border control, travelers can obtain the tourist visa in advance instead of queuing for the visa-on-arrival.

Updated Situation and Travel Tips for Expats

Backpacking Cambodia was one of the best experiences you’ll ever imagine. While the country is still trying to find its way after the horrifying genocide carried by the Khmer Rouge regime, there are many reasons to relocate to the country. Without further ado, let’s walk you through the process.

When to Travel To Cambodia

As of 2021, the best time to visit Cambodia is between November and February as the heat dies down. Meanwhile, it’s still dry enough for outdoor activities, but many people still enjoy seeing the country from March through May as the weather starts to get warmer, making it perfect for scuba diving and all.

Hire a Driver or Take a Bus

The traffic in Cambodia is notorious and not in a good state, whereas traffic rules seem to be non-existent. For the locals in the country, this is not the problem as they have long since grown compared to what bit used to be. For foreign tourists, it can quickly become overwhelming for the first time. That’s why we advise you to travel by public transport.

Always Respect the Religion

As a foreigner, it’s always essential to have respect for the country’s culture. The same method applies to Cambodia. And the vast majority of the country is Buddhist, so they have certain customs regarding clothes, and dressing, especially for women.

Be Conscious of Packing Luggage

In Cambodia, the weather can be pretty hot, humid, and sometimes sunny. Therefore, be conscious when you’re packing your luggage to the country. Besides, when you finish with sunscreen, you can pack more of it as it’s essential. But, always remember that you’ll have to cover yourself, even in good/bad weather.

Cambodia Gay and Lesbian

Gay and lesbian travelers shouldn’t experience any problems when traveling to this country. Homosexuality is not illegal, although neither is recognized and talked about, but they accept two women and men to link hands or arms in public.

Benefits of Living in Cambodia (2021)

As Cambodia’s expat community continues to swell, there’s an obvious appeal to live and enjoy the Kingdom of Wonder. While there are bountiful advantages of living here, there are tons of disadvantages too. So, it would be better to weigh both options before planning to relocate in 2021.

Life is Easy in Cambodia

Unlike other countries you’ll ever think of, living in Cambodia makes life easy for locals and foreigners. Moreover, rules are rarely abided by, and health and safety are also scarce. They are proud of their culture, and the religious sites with music, dance, arts, and folklore will always constitute an intriguing journey to travel to this country.

Cambodia Is Developing

Cambodia is still developing, and there’s no doubt that development is happening in the country at a rapid pace. Aside from these facts, roads are constantly being upgraded, and infrastructures are improved, there are new accommodations, and also new initiatives are being launched. So, there is something new to explore in this country.

Great Living Conditions in Cambodia

The cost has got to be the first reason when considering a move to Cambodia. This is because; a move to this country should lower your overall expenses, no matter the home country you’re coming from. Meanwhile, a simple apartment in the country can cost you nothing less than $100 for a whole month.

Digital Nomad Lifestyle in Cambodia

For expats looking to relocate to freelance or live this digital nomad lifestyle, a move to this country will offer essential and desirable benefits. This is because; Wi-Fi is widely available across most towns, and you can purchase high-speed mobile internet at a low price. Also, in Cambodia, there are little to no restrictions on the website you can visit.

Wonderful Expat Community

People in Cambodia are enormously welcoming, and the language is easy to learn. Besides, English is widely spoken in major towns and cities, and it’s possible to make true friends with the locals as fast as possible. With this in mind, you can feel included in a local society when you enter the country.

Great Options to Eat Well

For many expats in Cambodia, dining out daily proves to be more affordable than in other countries you could ever imagine. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there are enticing options of food to consider. And while the quality of food available is relatively high, the price remains surprisingly low.

Fair Visas and Immigration Rules

Cambodia has recently launched a dedicated Retirement Visa, and it’s available to foreigners upon their arrival. Moreover, some of the main criteria you need to satisfy are being aged 55 years or older and hold a valid passport. This way, immigration officials can then be extended through a travel agent.

Cons

Expats Liable To Live Younger

The average life expectancy for Westerners living in Western countries is about 75 to 80 years old. In Cambodia, the case is different, as the life expectancy of living in Cambodia is about 57 years old. Although there are several reasons why moving to this country will shave more years of your life, but you just have to weigh other factors. Meanwhile, the government has a lot of common diseases.

Horrible Place for Child-Raising

If you’re planning to raise your child in this country, it would be better that you make a Plan B. Besides, World Health Organization statistics show that a child born in Cambodia is ten times more likely to die before the age of five than a child born in other countries. This is because; most of the diseases that kill adults in Cambodia are even more dangerous to young children.

Appalling Infrastructure in Cambodia

This is one of the reasons why we advise you to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of moving to this country. Even when you compare the infrastructure here to other neighboring countries such as Vietnam, you’ll see its no doubt that the infrastructure is truly appalling. Aside from this fact, the schools, utilities, hospitals, and roads are of inferior quality.

Liable to Destroy Your Financial Future

Moving to Cambodia can affect your financial future. Let’s agree that the hallmark of a successful life is living as long as possible while acquiring many possessions and getting a good wife. With that being said, it may not be easy to get a good wife in Cambodia unless you’re transferred to a multinational company.

You May Become an Alcoholic Expats

If you’re not careful in the country, you may become an alcoholic expat and make friends gossipy. This is because; the country has long been known for fugitives and fuck ups, as well as death pats and deadbeats. Moreover, there are a lot of Western bar owners in the country offering exclusive drinks to locals.

4 Things to Know As an Expat

Before moving to Cambodia, there are many things you need to know. Jumping from one travel blog to the other could give you outdated information. If you take the time to read our content, you’ll see that we’re giving you the best information from a reliable source. Now, below are the things expat should know.

1. SIM Cards Usage

I’ve seen various blogs saying you’ll need to buy a SIM card when getting to Cambodia. This is not true, and it’s even seen as outdated information. Your phone can work perfectly with your SIM; that’s why you’ll need to read this content well to save the stress and money of buying a new SIM card.

2. Getting Job in Cambodia

Getting a job in this country is not as easy mention. Before arriving in Cambodia, I’ve heard that the use of email was sporadic at best. Later did I know most schools were hired on a walk-in basis. Most places in Cambodia use email, and you can easily apply for jobs online even before arriving in the country. More so, it’s always better if you research well, as this could make moving and getting a job a stress-free process.

3. Learn Few Khmer Words

While it is not necessary to speak Khmer fluently, it’s better to learn few words to communicate with the locals. With this in mind, you should endeavor to learn the language if you genuinely want to know more about their culture and norms. Ultimately, you’d be glad to discover new things while living in Cambodia.

4. Understanding Visa Process

ITA will definitely post about Cambodian visas, but it’s better to know a lot of information before traveling to the country. Surprisingly, some companies may cover your visa fee, while some may reimburse the visa cost at the end of the contract.

Types of Expat Visa in Cambodia

For most outsides that have never been to Cambodia, it’s quite essential to know the kind of visa suitable while traveling to this country. Also, a visa for Cambodia is needed for citizens from most countries globally, be it for study, work, tourism, or business. While Cambodia is closed to general tourism now for the COVID-19 pandemic, let’s quickly dive into the types of visas in the country.
