Health Insurance Providers in the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean Sea. Although it is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, it has an independent economy and is governed by its own national government.

The health care system in the Cayman Islands is managed solely by the government, which operates public hospitals and clinics that provide subsidized medical services for all its residents. Health insurance in the Cayman Islands is provided by The Government Health Insurance Office (GHIO).

This non-profit public entity provides health coverage for the entire population, except for employees of the offshore business sector who are covered by their employer’s international insurance plan. As the main insurer of all citizens, GHIO contracts directly with medical clinics and hospitals nationwide.

The government also offers additional health insurance through private services such as MediShield. Medishield Insurance Company Limited is a licensed insurance company in the Cayman Islands that provides international indemnity and non-resident travel insurance to expatriate employees of offshore companies and their dependents for up to three years after departure.

However, many people choose to purchase private health insurance plans outside of the government due to seeking care abroad at lower cost, faster access to healthcare services, and quality of care is often better than what they would receive from the public sector. There are at least five established international private health insurance providers in the Cayman Islands.

Many expatriates choose to be covered by one of these private health insurance companies, which can provide them with the highest standard of health care services without waiting for months for treatment. The following is a brief description of five private International Health Insurance providers in the Cayman Islands.

AXA PPP

International offers health insurance policies to expatriates and their families who need comprehensive coverage worldwide. They have a wide network of hospitals worldwide that provide medical treatment on their behalf, as well as a variety of private physicians that accept their fees as payment in full.

Cigna TTK

Cigna TTK is one of the oldest and largest private health insurance providers in India. They are licensed to provide international health insurance services across Asia, the Middle East, and the Africa region, including the Cayman Islands.

Medical Insurance Company (MIC)

Medical Insurance Company offers plans that can be customized according to your needs at lower costs than most other companies in the Cayman Islands. They are committed to providing their customers access to high-quality medical care at affordable rates.

NNB Global Insurance Company

NNB Global Insurance Company is a privately owned insurance provider that has insured healthcare services in 150 countries worldwide since 1976. They offer both individual and family health plans to expats who want to be covered for their entire stay abroad, as well as for a short-term visit.

Swiss Medical

Swiss Medical has been providing international health insurance to expatriates and business travelers since 1985. They provide access to more than 100 medical facilities, including private physicians and hospitals worldwide, with customer care available 24/7 in English, French, and Spanish.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cayman Island

What should I take with me when I visit the dentist?

Write down your name and phone number on a piece of paper to give to the dentist, just in case he needs to call you during the day! Pack everything you need for yourself: your hygiene tools, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, or any personal items. You can also take a book with you if you feel like reading during the appointment.

Is internet access limited on this island?

Yes, it’s true that internet access is limited on this island. The Cayman Islands are an offshore financial center, so they have extremely tight data protection laws to protect their clients’ privacy. Thus, internet service providers can only offer their services to companies that have obtained an official business license from the Cayman Islands government.

How can I find the nearest dentist?

You can use online directories or ask your general practitioner for advice. In order to avoid misunderstandings and wrong addresses, it’s better to call beforehand and make an appointment. Besides, this way you can confirm the address and ask any questions.

Where to find medical help in Cayman Island?

First of all, dial 911 to get your emergency case handled. The police officers will direct you to the necessary place, whether an ambulance or a hospital. If this is not something urgent, see your general practitioner. He will send you to a specialist or give you a medical certificate, if necessary. Check out this directory to find the nearest general practitioner in your area.

Conclusion

The healthcare system in Cayman Island is different from other countries because the Cayman Islands have many separate statutory health insurers. This means that patients are free to choose their GP without being restricted by which insurer they have. Nonetheless, refer to this article to know more.

A Guide To Healthcare System In The Cayman Islands part 2 – Part one is here.

Healthcare Systems in the Cayman Islands

One of the most common questions to businessmen and women is “What are the healthcare system options in the Cayman Islands?” understandably because this question directly affects their workforce.

There are many health systems in the Cayman Islands. Some are public, and others are private. They include; two private health insurance companies – Direct Medical Insurance Company (DMIC) and Cayman National Insurance Company (CNIC).

Others include the publicly funded health services – the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (CIHSA), which operates a private clinic; Queen Elizabeth Hospital; and public clinics. I will write about each system below.

CIHSA

This is a government agency. It provides free medical and dental care at its hospital and its clinics. It offers services that include accident and emergency care (ER), outpatient, antenatal, x-rays, laboratory tests, family planning services; minor surgery; patient transport; community nursing; home help; diabetic nurse visits; physical therapy/occupational therapy; speech therapy; counseling services, child health service for children under five years of age.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

This is a public hospital built in the 1950s and takes all emergency cases. The government has plans to upgrade it to handle less serious medical cases as well. The hospital staffs are highly trained, but the equipment they have maybe outdated. It is also not easy for non-locals to access the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Direct Medical Insurance Company (DMIC)

DMIC is partnered with Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) to provide healthcare services. Out of all the five systems, it is the only health insurance company that offers clinics in the Cayman Islands. It provides full coverage for outpatients and partial coverage for inpatients. All clients must be approved prior to receiving benefits.

Cayman National Insurance Company (CNIC)

CNIC provides medical care for Caymanians and residents of the country only. Similar to DMIC, it is partnered with HMO. It covers full coverage for outpatients and partial coverage for inpatients. CNIC, too requires prior approval before providing benefits.

Public Clinics

Cayman Islands government runs public health care clinics for locals and residents of the country. These include; George Town, Bodden Town, West Bay, North Side (East End), East End, and Sister Islands. The healthcare services in these clinics are not very good, but they can provide some basic medication such as painkillers and antibiotics.

Factors Affecting Cayman Islands Healthcare Systems

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. Healthcare is provided at no cost to residents and visitors by The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (CIHSA). Important factors influencing healthcare systems include government, population size, economy, culture, life expectancy, etc. In this section, we will look at several factors affecting healthcare systems in the Cayman Islands.

Population Size

The population of The Cayman Islands is approximately more than 60,792 people. This includes over 14,402 residents and 56,390 non-residents (those who live outside the Cayman Islands). As a result of having relatively few permanent residents, there are chronic shortages of health service providers. This means that many healthcare services are understaffed, and waiting times for appointments can be long.

Economy

The Cayman Islands is a wealthy country; in fact, by some accounts, it is the wealthiest country in the world per capita. The high GDP per capita of US$80,937 makes it one of the highest in the world for this measure. With such a high GDP per capita, there is considerable wealth in the country and therefore, considerable resources available to health service providers.

This leads to increased availability of up-to-date equipment and improved healthcare infrastructure. However, despite the relative wealth of The Cayman Islands, they do face budget constraints when it comes to healthcare that many other countries do not. This leads to the prioritization of spending in certain areas over others.

For example, The Cayman Islands has much lower cancer rates than the USA, despite having almost identical life expectancies. This is because much less funding goes towards cancer prevention than cancer treatment.

Governance

The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory. The Queen appoints a Governor to represent her and deliver executive power, while the elected House of Assembly (Legislative) has control over legislation and taxation.

The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (CIHSA), which runs healthcare in the country, was established in 1977 under an Act of Parliament, the Health Services Authority Act. In essence, this means that healthcare infrastructure and policy are formed by a system of checks and balances between three separate branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial.

Culture

The culture of The Cayman Islands is a blend of British and Caribbean cultures. It is influenced heavily by a strong British influence in language, food, and customs. The Cayman Islands is a predominantly Christian country with the major denominations being Anglican, Church of God, Baptist, and Roman Catholic.

The religious make-up of The Cayman Islands differs considerably from the USA, which has a much higher percentage of people with no religious affiliation. This can be seen in healthcare policies; for instance, there are currently no laws requiring vaccination of children attending school.

Due to having British influence and being an Anglican majority country, The Cayman Islands has a strong connection with the UK and, therefore, many immigrants from the European Union (EU) and beyond. This can cause healthcare systems to be overwhelmed in peak seasons, such as Christmas and other public holidays when EU citizens vacation in their home country. This contributes to long wait times for appointments.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy at birth in The Cayman Islands is approximately 79.2 years of age, notably higher than in the USA (78.8 years). The factors that contribute to such long life expectancy are likely due to a combination of healthy lifestyle choices and effective healthcare infrastructure.

For example, there is a very high availability of clean drinking water and safe food sources. This reduces the risk of contracting diseases spread through water and food, such as cholera. The Cayman Islands has low rates of obesity (lower than in the USA), which means less chance of heart disease due to diet choices.

Additionally, in The Cayman Islands, there is an anti-smoking culture applied largely across all age groups. However, life expectancy in the USA is influenced heavily by factors such as poverty and income. This means that there are more deaths from diseases related to lack of access to health care (such as diabetes) and higher rates of obesity and smoking.

The Cayman Islands has a different healthcare system from the USA: it is funded largely through taxation rather than private insurance. This makes the government responsible for providing healthcare to citizens and is a source of debate within society as to whether or not it should cover all costs or just some.

The best time to consider your financial situation is when you are moving to a new country.

Introduction

The Cayman Islands’ healthcare system is world-renowned for its outstanding quality of care. And it’s one of the reasons why thousands of people from all over the world visit or move to this British Overseas Territory each year.

Since 2011, a total investment of more than £100 million has been made in new hospitals, equipment, buildings, and general changes to ensure that the Cayman Islands’ healthcare system is one of the best in the world. The service continues to be modernized to meet the needs of a 21st-century community while keeping up-to-date with traditional values and standards.

This article will provide an insight into the recent changes made, as well as some information on the history of healthcare in the Cayman Islands. 2022 will mark the Cayman Islands’ 126th anniversary of becoming an Overseas Territory.

It has come a long way since it started offering healthcare services to residents and visitors in 1859, paving the way for other countries to learn about its top-notch medical standards. During its early days, there was no place to go for medical treatment. Instead, people would make their own arrangements with a doctor willing to visit them at home.

For more serious cases, they were often sent by ship or boat to Kingston in Jamaica or even further abroad when necessary. But, we have compiled this content to explain more about the healthcare system in the Cayman Islands. Not only is that, but we will walk you through all you need to know.

Benefits of Health Insurance in the Cayman Islands

Health insurance is necessary for all people that live in developed countries. Unfortunately, many people actually don’t have it- especially those living in the Caribbean. The cost of health care rises every year and has become so expensive that some jobs offer their employees health benefits as part of their total compensation package.

People who don’t have health insurance often put it off and think they will get to it someday. They might feel like there is no sense in starting an application process that would take months before anything comes out of it. However, everyone should know that the benefits of having health insurance far outweigh the costs.

Low Cost for Young Adults

Insurance companies often assign discounts to young people who want to buy a package because their risk of falling sick is low, to begin with. This makes it easier for them to get started on living healthy without worrying too much about paying a huge sum of money. Besides, there’s no need for them to pay premiums until they can earn their own income.

Preventative Care Costs Reduced

Preventative care is a way to keep your body in shape so that you can reduce future health risks. With insurance, preventative care costs less than treating major illnesses such as cancer, which occurs when people neglect their bodies with bad habits and unhealthy foods.

Mom and Dad Can Get Their Packages Too

No family is complete without the parents. Yet, many young adults aren’t covered by their parent’s health insurance plans because they are covered under their own plan. This leaves mom and dad exposed to big bills when something happens while traveling or at home.

With an individual health insurance plan, all family members can be covered under a single package without paying extra.

Save On Prescription Drugs

Another major benefit of health insurance is that most plans will cover your prescriptions, depending on your policy. This is extremely helpful for people who have ongoing medical conditions or are taking medication. These costs can add up quickly if you are not covered and can get expensive if you do not have health insurance.

Preventative Care Is More Affordable

With an insurance plan, you will likely be able to take advantage of discounted services when it comes to preventative care. This includes annual check-ups and blood work which in the long run will prevent a major medical situation in the future. Not only are these services affordable with health insurance, but this is the best way to maintain your current state of health.

Reduce Out Of Pocket Costs

One of the biggest benefits people do not realize is how much money they are saving by having health insurance. This is because, with an insurance plan, you will have reduced costs when it comes to deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance. With health insurance, you can avoid these extra costs, which over a year will amount to quite a lot for people who receive plenty of medical care.

No Damage to Credit

Getting health insurance is also beneficial because it will not affect your credit. Other types of plans, like life insurance or auto insurance, can devastate your credit if you cannot pay the monthly fee. However, most plans for medical needs do not require a monthly fee which makes this benefit one of the best.

Gain Access to Preventative Services

A major benefit of having health insurance is that most plans will allow you to have free or discounted access to certain preventative care. These include annual physicals, pregnancy tests, and other services that are great for your health. These can help detect problems early on, which makes it easier on the medical system should an emergency arise.

Avoid Lifetime Limits

Many people think that they do not need health insurance because they are healthy and don’t go to the doctor often. Unfortunately, this is a false sense of security as medical conditions can develop at any time without any warning.

This is why it’s important to have coverage in place just in case. If you develop a medical condition, you will be happy to know that many companies do not have lifetime limits anymore. This means that the coverage will stay in place so you can get treatment for whatever is wrong with you throughout your entire life.

Access Top Quality Care

Having health insurance makes it so much easier to access top-quality care. This is because the doctors and specialists will see you as a patient and not turn you away. Many people may not afford the medical care they need if they don’t have coverage in place.

When you add up all costs, such as transportation and missed work, it can become very expensive to get treated for a medical condition without health insurance.
