Pros

1. Explore All That Bali Has To Offer

If you are interested in building a business or relationship with the Balinese people, it would mean living in Bali for at least six months. During this time, you will explore the island and meet its very friendly people who love guests.

You can see many unique places that most tourists don’t even know about. There are also many exciting activities available such as surfing, diving, and visiting ancient temples and places of art and history, that will make your stay in Bali an unforgettable experience.

2. A New Focus on Business

The preparations for COVID-19 have led to a big shift in how a lot of people’s work is being done. If you need to set up an office for your company, this could be the perfect time to build it in Bali because fewer other businesses are competing with yours at the moment.

3. Meet and Network With People

If you want to build relationships and increase your business contacts, Bali is a much better choice than many other places in the world. This is because it is such a popular tourist destination that everyone loves going there, which means that nearly all important players tend to visit at some point.

4. A Great Place to Learn New Things

Since Bali is becoming an increasingly popular choice with business people, there are many opportunities for you to learn new things that will help your career both in Bali and back at home. You could attend seminars or classes on certain topics of interest to you, which would be more convenient than traveling to another country.

5. Everything Is Close By

For the most part, things are very close in Bali. The island is not very big, so you will find that everything necessary for your daily life is located within one area. It takes only about an hour to travel from north to south, or 30 minutes from east to west. This means that you will not waste too much of your time traveling, and you can instead focus on things that are important to you.

6. Great Food All Over the Island

There is an endless variety of mouthwatering foods available in Bali, with each sub-region having something delicious to offer its visitors. Many restaurants use fresh local ingredients that you can take advantage of during your stay.

7. Avoid Stress

With the increase in COVID-19, many people are under a lot of pressure to get everything done as quickly as possible. However, if you decide to live in Bali, those pressures will be nonexistent, and you will have much more time on your hands for the things you want to do.

8. A Growing Economy

Bali is a great tourist destination that continues to grow in popularity, which means the economic opportunities are always increasing. In fact, according to Forbes magazine, it can be one of the best places for you to start a new business because it will be fairly straightforward, and you will have a steady customer base even if the business is still new.

9. Gain Entrepreneurial Experience

Since Bali is becoming an increasingly popular choice for entrepreneurs, you are sure to find plenty of people who are interested in doing business with someone from your home country or city. This means that you can build your networks while living in Bali and establish yourself as a reliable and efficient business person.

10. The Internet Is Super-Fast

Many people considering moving to Bali claim that the main thing they’re looking forward to is having super-fast internet since there has been evidence that it can be 15 times faster than what you might find in other countries. This will allow you to work efficiently and conduct business with your clients promptly.

Cons

Cost Of Living

Bali is a very pricey place to live and requires an average of $4,000-5,000 USD per month for rent and other expenses. That’s more than most COVID attendees can afford on their own, so many resorts to shared housing with groups of roommates. While living with others means you’re more likely to meet lifelong friends, you can also expect a problematic roommate situation.

Limited Flight Availability from Your City Of Origin

Flying from the US or Canada into Bali is no easy feat and involves long-haul flights that take around 22+ hours each way (including layovers) and cost almost USD 1,000. This means that you’re likely to fly for a full day to get to COVID-19, and it could take days or even weeks to return home after the conference.

Small Community Size

Because Bali is such a small island, it’s tough to meet people at local events. Hotels are prohibitively expensive, so the more affordable resorts are 45 minutes away from downtown. Your social life will most likely revolve around the hotel where you stay and your roommates, which is fine if you enjoy their company but can make it hard to meet new people.

No-Go Party Zone

If you want to go out partying or clubbing, you can forget about it. Bali has no nightlife because alcohol is forbidden by local law there. There are definitely bars and cafes where you can drink coffee or tea, but if your goal is to party all weekend, this might not be the place for you.

Safety Risks

Beware of petty theft like pickpocketing and theft of personal belongings (such as passports or laptops). Not all forms of crime are petty, though; you’re also at risk of encountering violent crime like muggings. Many locals carry weapons to protect themselves because they don’t trust the authorities.

Limited Cultural Activities

Bali isn’t the most culturally advanced country; they mostly stick to their Hindu religion and don’t embrace multiculturalism. Furthermore, they’re not accepting of LGBT people (the only exception is Uluwatu), so if you’re openly gay or transgender, this is not the place for you.

Poor Communication

Some people might struggle with communication because of the language barrier. Bali is a primarily Indonesian island, and most locals don’t speak English well enough for you to communicate without an interpreter. If you’re not comfortable speaking either English or Indonesian, this could make it hard for you to learn about or get around in the country.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bali

What’s living in Bali Like?

Well, living in Bali is like living in any other city, except you get to live on an island. You’ll usually need a motorbike, one of the most common modes of transport in Bali (containing up to 3 people and their belongings) because public transportation is not as good as living in Europe or the US (in fact, it’s worse). Most expats in Bali live in villas, which can be comparable to living in the US, Canada, or Europe.

What’s Balinese food like?

Balinese cuisine is quite distinct from other regions in Indonesia due to geographic and cultural influences. While Indonesian food is mostly spicy with solid flavors, Balinese food tends to be sweeter. The island is also well-known for its variety of fruits.

What kind of climates are there in Bali?

The climate in Bali is tropical, with humidity levels reaching up to 80%. Temperatures range from 19 C during the high season (April) to 30 C during the low season (December). The wet season lasts from October to April, and the dry season begins in May and ends in September.

What is there to do in Bali?

There are several interesting sightseeing opportunities located all over the island, such as Monkey Forest (Ubud), Tanah Lot Temple (Tabanan), Tirta Empul (Tampaksiring), Pura Melanting (Mengiat), etc. Bali is also well-known for its beaches popular tourist attractions in the island; Kuta Beach, Seminyak Beach, Nusa Dua Beach, Jimbaran Bay, Uluwatu Beach, Sanur Beach, and Amed Beach are some of the most famous.

What is the best way to get around Bali?

The cheapest and most convenient way to explore Bali is by motorbike. It’s also the most popular mode of transport among expats in Bali because it’s cheap (although not as cheap as using local transport like Bemo or Ojek), and it provides good flexibility to move around the city.

What should I bring?

Sunblock, sunglasses, and shoes (if you plan on going to a temple) are recommended. Other necessities include an International driver’s license (recommended), mosquito repellent, activated charcoal tablets, tissues, hand sanitizer, and bottled water.

Conclusion

Living in Bali as an expat presents many opportunities for work, travel, and adventure. Bali is a tropical island with beautiful beaches and warm weather year-round. Bali is rich in history, art, and culture. It has long been known for its unique blend of traditional Hinduism and Buddhism. Nevertheless, you should refer to this guide to know more about when Bali will reopen for foreign visitors.

Things to Know Before Moving to Bali

Bali is a great place to visit, but even better if you decide to call it home. Bali is an ideal destination for expats to relocate because of its tropical weather, laidback vibes, and diverse culture.

It’s no wonder that Bali is one of the most popular places around Southeast Asia for expats and digital nomads to call home. Before you pack your bags and buy your one-way ticket, here are seven things to keep in mind.

1. Rentals are Paid Ahead of Time

It’s no doubt that living costs are much cheaper than back home, but this doesn’t mean you should avoid paying your bills. Most places require renters to pay for rent and utilities in advance (usually 1-2 months), which can be a big shock to that first starting.

2. Western “Rights” Aren’t Always Enforced

Although Bali does have a strong sense of culture, but that doesn’t stop issues from arising when it comes to the rights of expats. In Bali especially, expat rights aren’t always enforced, and although you’re not in your home country where certain laws can be used to protect you, your landlord is much more likely to side with sick Balinese neighbors than with you.

3. Cars and Motorcycles Are a Necessity

With the lack of street lights and sidewalks, driving yourself around town is a necessity. Having a motorcycle or car will make your life much easier and more convenient. Be sure to bring all relevant documents (registration, insurance, etc.) when registering your vehicle; otherwise, you could be in for a nightmare involving fines.

4. Don’t Go Shopping at Night

In Bali, most shop hours are from morning until evening, and many shop owners actually lock up early or close their shutters with no warning. Be sure to call ahead of time before going out to do some “night shopping,” as your experiences may vary.

5. There’s More to Bali than Just Kuta

Many places in the world equate itself with one thing, and Bali is no different. Although this small island holds a great amount of natural beauty, it also has fantastic beaches, national parks, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

This provides expats with an endless amount of things to do and places to explore. With over 100,000 expats living in Bali, there’s much more to this island than meets the eye!

6. A Word of Caution

Bali is very different from most places in the world. With a growing expat community, this island has become an increasingly popular place to live with many advantages that come along with it. However, many cultural differences must be respected when living here. Although you’ll encounter some less-than-ideal situations, remember to stay calm and always stay positive!

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

If you’re struggling with anything or simply feel like you need some guidance, don’t hesitate to ask! There are many people here on the island that can speak English and would love to help. Use your resources and enjoy your stay in Bali.

Visa and Immigration Requirements to Move to Bali

Acquiring immigration permission to enter Bali appears deceptively simple, but it’s actually complicated. The Balinese immigration authority has strict entry requirements that are not always obvious or easy to meet. This article will help you plan your trip by explaining the ins and outs of getting a visa for Indonesia.

Indonesia has three main options for immigration: a free visa on arrival, a visa on arrival (VoA), and a visa before arrival (Visa On Arrival or VOA). You can choose which option is best for you. In general, tourists from most countries are issued either a 30-day free stay visa upon entry, or they are issued a 60-day VoA after arrival that cannot be extended.

The 30-day visa on arrival can be obtained at any of Indonesia’s ten international airports by presenting a passport with at least six months validity and one blank page, proof of onward transport out of the country (a return/onward ticket), and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay (a credit card and cash). The visa is free, but it cannot be extended.

The 60-day VoA can be used for traveling throughout Indonesia, and within the 30 days of the initial entry to the country, you may also exit and reenter as many times as you wish. This VoA can be extended once for an additional 30 days, but it can only be extended at an immigration office in Indonesia. The cost for this extension is about USD 50.

If you wish to stay in Indonesia for longer than 90 days, you must apply for a Tourist Visa (Visa Kunjungan or VK) before arriving. A VK allows entry into Indonesia for up to 60 days and can be extended once for an additional 30 days.

While a VK is not required for nationals of certain countries, it’s always a good idea to apply for one since there are quite a few nationalities that do require visas before arrival. This includes citizens from less common countries such as Afghanistan, Angola, Cuba, Ghana, Iraq, Laos, Libya, Myanmar (Burma), Nigeria, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

Below is a list of countries whose citizens are required to apply for a VK before arriving in Indonesia:

Afghanistan

Angola

Iran

Benin Burkina Faso

Chad

Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire)

Eritrea

Democratic Republic of Congo

Laos

Congo

Cambodia

Liberia

Cameroon

Central African Republic

Libya

Djibouti

Burundi

Madagascar

Nepal

Niger

Mali

Nigeria

Palestine

Myanmar (Burma)

Leone

Somalia

Pakistan

Sri

Lanka

Senegal

Lanka

Sudan

Sierra

Suriname

Tanzania

Togo

Vietnam

Ethiopia

Ghana

Guinea

Haiti

Sri

Frequently Asked Questions about Bali

How long does it take to process the visa?

Processing times for Indonesian visas can vary from one embassy to another. In general, the length of time is between 15-35 days and costs about $75-$95. A consulate runs an express service that takes 3-5 working days and costs $120.

What are the different types of visas?

The type of visa you apply for depends on your nationality and reason for visiting. There is a Social Visa, Business Visa (ITAS), and Tourist Visa (KITAS). Each type has its own requirements, such as how long you are allowed to stay in Indonesia, if you can work there, etc.

How much are the visa fees?

Visa fees vary by nationality and processing time. A quick express service costs an additional $120. The average cost for a Tourist Visa is between $45-USD 55. Also, make sure you check to see if you need an additional visa for your wife or husband.

Conclusion

7 Things to Know About Bali Cultures and Traditions

Bali is a small island off the coast of Indonesia. It’s known for its beautiful beaches and stunning vistas, as well as its interesting cultures and traditions – some of which date back thousands of years. If you’re planning to visit Bali anytime soon, here are some things to consider about the islands’ cultures and traditions.

1) Bali Is Part of the Republic Of Indonesia

The island of Bali is actually only one small part of a vast archipelago made up of over 17,000 islands. This region is known as ‘Indonesia,’ and Bali itself is located in the southeast area near Australia. That being said, Bali’s culture is different from the rest of the nation, with its own language, dance traditions, and rituals.

2) Hinduism Has Been an Important Part of Bali’s Culture

Today, about 90% of the Balinese people are Hindu. This island is home to over 10,000 temples, which are devoted to honoring different deities. The most important of these temples is Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, located on Mount Bratan and dedicated to the water goddess Dewi Danu.

3) The ‘Cremation Tower’ Is an Important Part of Hindu Funerals

Known as a ‘Meru,’ this monument is actually quite similar to the Christian idea of a cathedral – except that it’s meant for cremations rather than weddings. There are 11 different types of merus, and different castes and social groups can use them.

4) Home to A Unique ‘Gender Wayang’ Tradition

Wayang refers to traditional Balinese theatre, an important part of the island’s culture for thousands of years. Traditionally, only men were allowed to perform in these plays (and this tradition is still followed today) – but these performances always included female roles.

5) The Legong Dance

This graceful dance traditionally involves young women skilled at balancing trays of offerings on their heads while performing specific movements with their hands. As a result, the dancer’s hands become an integral part of the performance and are often carved into temples to commemorate their performances.

6) Bali Has a Unique Form of Puppetry

Known as the ‘topeng,’ this traditional style is often used during special ceremonies and holidays. The puppets can be made from wood or buffalo hide, and they use real human hair to create their facial expressions.

7) There Are Different Types of Balinese Masks

While these masks are meant to be used for traditional ceremonies, they have become an integral part of the island’s tourism industry. Wearable masks are most commonly seen in performances at hotels and resorts, which bring this unique Balinese tradition into the 21st century.

What’s Living in Bali Like for Expatriates?

Living in Bali is a unique experience. Balinese people are so kind and helpful, the weather is fantastic all year round, and the food is delicious. However, there are also some downsides to living in Bali as well. Read more about what’s good and bad about living in Bali as an expat!

The Pros

Low Cost Of Living

As an expat in Bali, your quality of life is significantly improved by the low cost of living. Food, rent, and just about every other necessity for living are cheap compared to Western standards. It is possible to live on USD 1,000 per month.

Plenty of Jobs Available

Expats moving to Bali have a number of options when it comes to finding a job. There are English schools, dive shops, and hostels throughout the island, with openings for those willing to work hard.

Quality Education Available

Many expats choose to move their families over to Bali, largely due to the fact that there is an abundance of high-quality education options available for children. International schools in Bali are very affordable and generally regarded as being better than schools in many other parts of the world.

Plenty to Do During Free Time

For those expats who love to spend their free time participating in physical activities, living in Bali is a dream come true. In addition to some of the world’s best surfing beaches, there are also many mountains that offer some great hiking. There is a ton of nightlife as well for those who love to party.

Great Weather

One of the biggest draws for those considering moving to Bali is the fantastic weather. The average temperature throughout the year is a warm 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This, along with the low cost of living, makes Bali a very appealing choice for expats looking to move abroad.

Great Nightlife

Bali is known for its abundance of great nightlife options, which can include everything from high-end nightclubs to laid-back beach bars where visitors can enjoy a vacation-like atmosphere around the clock. Many expats who move over complain that after a few days, they simply cannot handle the early mornings anymore and start staying out late enjoying the nightlife.

Relaxing Atmosphere

While Bali is very popular with expats looking to move abroad, it’s also a great place for tourists simply looking for a relaxing vacation. For those who like to spend their time on the beach, living in Bali is one of the most beautiful places that you could hope to live. With great weather and calming beaches, this is a truly relaxing destination that offers something for everyone.

The Cons

There Is Mass Unemployment in Bali

The fact of the matter is most people from Bali do not want to work at the tourism jobs that expats are taking over. This is due to the fact that these jobs require very little skill and are far beneath what most Balinese people would like to do or are trained to do.

Hectic Traffic

The number of expats moving to Bali has resulted in hectic traffic on the island. There is so much tourism now that it is hard for people to get where they need to go, and cars are getting into accidents frequently because of this. In fact, the number of tourists outweighs the number of Balinese by 7 to 1.

Bad Economy

The fact that most people from Bali don’t want to work at tourism jobs has caused a bad economy on the island. This results in more and more locals being forced into poverty, causing an increase in crime on the island.

Not only is that, but the presence of tourists has caused the prices of local goods to increase while wages remain low. This is causing a huge problem within Bali, and it will continue for years to come.

Environmental Issues

Many environmental issues stem from the fact that there are so many expats in Bali now. Many people have been cutting down the native forests on the island at a rapid rate, which is causing damage to some of the unique ecosystems in South East Asia. This deforestation will change how much water can be held by the soil and eventually lead to many problems for people living in Bali.

Racial Tensions

The final problem that expats living in Bali will face is racial tension. Due to there being so many white people on the island, it has become a very popular destination for Asian tourists as well. This may seem like a great thing at first, but many of these tourists are not as respectful as Westerners, such as those from the United States and Europe.

They lack knowledge of Indonesian culture and will do things such as spit on the floor, urinate in public, and disrespect elders. This has caused many problems for expats trying to experience Balinese life.

Loss of Culture

Another problem with the mass of foreigners coming to Bali is that this has caused the people to lose their own culture. They work at tourism jobs for little money, and there are never enough Balinese people working in these jobs.

This causes them to spend most of their time around expats rather than their own people, making it difficult for them to find a spouse or have children. This is causing a huge problem for the Balinese people in the future, and many of them will have no cultural identity once the mass amounts of expats move back to their countries.

Lack of Infrastructure

Finally, the last problem expats will face when living in Bali is a lack of infrastructure. There is simply not enough room on the island for everyone to live and work without causing problems.

This has created many health risks such as traffic accidents, mass amounts of pollution around major cities, and more crime than ever before. These issues are not anything that can be easily fixed, but they will continue to worsen for decades to come.

Loss of Natural Resources

Another problem with living in Bali is the loss of natural resources. Due to the mass amount of tourism on this island, many people are logging down forests at an alarming rate. What used to be one of the most biodiverse places in Southeast Asia has turned into a barren wasteland because of overpopulation and the lack of education on the island.

Cultural Disrespect

The final downfall that expats will face when living in Bali is cultural disrespect. Many white people move to this island without knowing how to respect people from another culture. Many tourists will spit on the ground, urinate in public, and disrespect elders. This creates a problem for expats because their actions will constantly cause problems for themselves and the locals.
